For a first day in Hai Phong, concentrate on the Opera House, Tam Bac walking areas, Du Hang Pagoda and the museum, with time for local food. Choose Do Son or Elephant Mountain for a separate outing beyond the urban centre. Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay need their own island and boat arrangements rather than a spare hour between city stops.
The places below cover different kinds of visits, from short city walks to a full day on the coast. Build your plan around your accommodation, available time and interest in walking, history or the sea; you do not need to fit all eight into one trip.
1. Hai Phong Opera House and the city centre
The Opera House is the natural starting point for a city walk. From the square, continue through the central streets toward Tam Bac Lake, stopping for coffee or one of Hai Phong’s well-known local dishes. The building’s performance interior is not always open for casual visits, so appreciate the exterior unless an authorised event or tour provides access.
2. Tam Bac walking area
Tam Bac Lake and the Tam Bac riverfront are separate walking segments, so check which one a map pin identifies. The lake fits a central walk from the Opera House and flower-market area; add the riverfront if you have more time. Late afternoon and evening are useful for combining a walk with dinner, with the route and length adjusted to the weather and your stops.
3. Du Hang Pagoda
Du Hang Pagoda is a Buddhist site for a cultural stop in the city. Visit quietly, dress with shoulders and knees covered, and avoid interrupting worship. A short guided explanation is useful because much of the site’s meaning is not obvious from architecture alone.
4. Hai Phong Museum and local history
For a central-city visit, use Hai Phong Museum at 66 Dien Bien Phu. The museum institution also has a location at 11 Hong Quang in Thanh Dong, outside this city-walk plan. Check the address as well as the name when arranging a ride.
The Dien Bien Phu museum is a useful orientation stop for local history. Confirm its opening arrangements and current displays before making a special trip; a temporary exhibition notice is not a permanent opening timetable.
5. Elephant Mountain, An Lao
Elephant Mountain combines limestone scenery, caves and local historical associations in the countryside outside the centre. It suits active travellers who want a half-day beyond the urban area. Wear shoes with grip and avoid exposed or slippery sections in rain. 6. Do Son and Hon Dau
Do Son is the city’s long-established seaside district. Its beaches are convenient for a change of pace, while Hon Dau adds forest, coastal views and a historic lighthouse setting. Sea conditions and boat access are weather-dependent; follow local notices rather than relying on a fixed online timetable.

Set aside a full day for a focused Cat Ba outing; staying overnight leaves more room for ferry connections and activities. Options include Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba National Park, Viet Hai village and the island’s beaches. 8. Trang Kenh–Bach Dang area
North of the urban centre, the Trang Kenh–Bach Dang landscape connects river scenery with the history of battles fought on the Bach Dang River. It is most rewarding with a guide or good background reading. Allow a half-day if combining several memorial and archaeological points. Bach Dang Giang memorial complex and Cao Quy stake field are separate sites; agree on the actual stops before arranging transport.
What to eat in Hai Phong

- Nem cua be: square crab spring rolls, usually served with noodles and herbs.
- Banh mi cay: small spicy baguettes with pate and chilli sauce.
- Snails and seafood: confirm the price by portion or weight before cooking, and explain any ingredient restrictions before ordering.
A practical one-day Hai Phong itinerary
For a day in the urban centre, visit Du Hang Pagoda, continue to the Opera House and central streets, and stop for a local lunch. Visit the Dien Bien Phu museum when it is open, then leave the late afternoon for Tam Bac and dinner.
If you prefer an active afternoon at Elephant Mountain, arrange transport and treat it as the main second half of the day, replacing the museum and a longer city walk. Allow for the hiking route, weather and drive back rather than fitting the mountain in as a brief extra stop.
With two or three days, keep the city for one day and give Cat Ba or Do Son its own day. Hai Phong works best when its urban heritage, food and coast are treated as complementary experiences.
