Cat Ba by Motorbike: Ferry Routes, Riding and Trip Planning

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

You can take a motorbike to Cat Ba on the Dong Bai–Cai Vieng ferry from the Hai Phong side, or on the Tuan Chau–Gia Luan ferry from Halong when that service and its access road are operating. The ferry is only one part of the journey; allow time to reach the pier and ride onward to your accommodation.

This trip suits riders who are already comfortable in traffic and on unfamiliar, winding roads. If you do not have the required documents, insurance or riding experience, use a bus or car transfer and arrange transport on the island instead.

Check your license, insurance and rental terms

Confirm that your license and any international permit are valid in Vietnam for the motorcycle you will use. Recognition depends on the issuing country and permit type. A car license or a rental shop’s willingness to hand over a scooter is not proof that you are entitled to ride it.

Check insurance for the rider, passenger, bike and third-party liability, including engine-size and license conditions. If renting on the mainland, get permission to take the bike onto a ferry and keep the rental company’s breakdown contact. Agree on the deposit and return conditions without leaving your passport as security.

Route from Hai Phong: Dong Bai to Cai Vieng

  1. Follow a motorcycle-appropriate route from your Hai Phong starting point toward the Tan Vu–Lach Huyen connection and Cat Hai Island.
  2. Navigate to Dong Bai ferry terminal, which replaced the old Got departure terminal.
  3. Buy the ticket for your motorbike and confirm how the rider and any passenger are charged.
  4. Follow staff instructions for queuing, boarding and securing the bike.
  5. After arriving at Cai Vieng, continue by road to Cat Ba town or your booked accommodation.

Set navigation for a motorbike and obey road signs; do not follow a car route onto an expressway. Save the current ferry map pin before leaving rather than following old directions to Got.

The Dong Bai–Cai Vieng ferry guide explains the crossing and connection checks. Confirm the current timetable in both directions and allow extra time for holiday or weekend queues.

The Cat Ba–Ha Long ferry offers open-water views from the passenger deck. Confirm the current timetable, vehicle acceptance and motorcycle ticket before riding to the terminal.

Route from Halong: Tuan Chau to Gia Luan

Check the Tuan Chau–Gia Luan sailing directly before riding to the terminal. Confirm that it accepts your vehicle on the departure you plan to use and that the road between Gia Luan and the rest of Cat Ba is open.

The water crossing is roughly an hour as a planning estimate, with waiting and riding time added separately. Seasonal timetables, weather and access-road disruption can change the plan. Do not rely on an old list of five daily sailings.

After arrival, follow the open road route toward your accommodation. If the Gia Luan option is unavailable, assess the longer journey via Dong Bai before setting off; that alternative also depends on a ferry and suitable weather.

Check the bike before you leave

  • Test both brakes, lights, indicators and horn.
  • Check tire condition, mirrors and fuel.
  • Photograph existing damage and confirm what to do after a breakdown.
  • Use a properly fitting, fastened helmet for both rider and passenger.
  • Secure luggage without affecting balance, steering or the lights.
  • Carry rain protection, water and a charged phone, with important directions saved offline.

Keep the first ride short enough to assess the bike. Do not use the journey to Cat Ba as your first lesson on a motorbike.

Planning rides on Cat Ba

Coastal scenery

The coastal road toward Cat Ba town has sea views, curves and roadside planting. Keep your attention on the road and stop only where parking is permitted and clear of traffic. A viewpoint is not an invitation to park on a bend or ride onto a pedestrian platform.

Cat Ba National Park is a stop for walking rather than riding; park securely and allow time for the trail you choose.

National park and caves

The inland route gives access to the national-park area, Trung Trang Cave and Hospital Cave. Choose one or two stops according to opening conditions and the time you want to spend off the bike. Cave visits and the Ngu Lam walk involve walking and steps; reaching the entrance by motorbike does not make the visit effortless.

Check the day’s access and entry arrangements at the park or attraction. Leave enough time to return in daylight, particularly if rain makes roads or footpaths slippery.

Beaches near town

For Cat Co or Tung Thu, check the current approach and designated parking with your accommodation. Walk the final section where vehicles are restricted. Leave valuables secured and keep any parking ticket.

Choose swimming conditions according to local warnings and lifeguard instructions. Strong waves, high water or poor visibility are reasons to stay out, not a feature to seek out. Conditions can change during the day.

Parking, accommodation and luggage

Ask your accommodation about secure overnight parking before booking. Do not assume that any roadside space is a legal or protected place to leave a bike. Lock it, keep valuables with you and confirm any parking charge before leaving.

On your arrival day, drop off heavy luggage before making extra sightseeing stops. An accommodation base in town is useful for walking to meals; a more remote stay requires additional riding or another transport plan after dark.

A manageable trip plan

Allow the arrival day for the ferry, hotel check-in and a short local ride if conditions are good. Use a separate day for the coastal road or national-park area rather than rushing directly from the ferry through every attraction.

For departure, check the return ferry and leave a generous margin before a train, flight or onward booking. If weather or road access deteriorates, shorten the ride and change the plan. The Hai Phong to Cat Ba transport comparison explains alternatives if riding no longer suits your trip.
