For most visitors staying in central Hai Phong, the two bus stations worth checking first are Vinh Niem Bus Station and Thuong Ly Bus Station. Vinh Niem serves a broad network of scheduled interprovincial coaches, while Thuong Ly is used by selected coach operators and several useful city-bus routes, including a connection toward Dong Bai ferry.
The correct terminal is always the one named in your operator’s confirmation. Many limousine vans and tourist buses use a company office, hotel pickup, or roadside meeting point instead of a bus station. Because present-day Hai Phong covers a much wider area than the old port city, this guide focuses on terminals relevant to visitors in the urban area rather than every station in the municipality.
Which Hai Phong bus station should you use?
- Vinh Niem Bus Station: check this first for a traditional interprovincial coach, but confirm that your operator actually enters the station.
- Thuong Ly Bus Station: use it when your ticket names Thuong Ly or when a current city-bus route from the station fits your journey.
- Vinh Bao Bus Station: useful when you are staying in the Vinh Bao area or your booked route specifically starts there.
- Northern Bus Station Hai Phong: do not treat it as a walk-up transport hub; travel there only with an operator-issued departure confirmation.
A destination name alone is not enough to identify the terminal. Two companies serving the same city can leave from different stations, offices, or pickup points.

Vinh Niem Bus Station
Vinh Niem is a practical first station to check when you want a scheduled interprovincial coach from the urban area. It accommodates operators serving destinations in several regions of Vietnam.

- Useful city-bus connection: Route 01 runs between Vinh Niem Bus Station and Du Nghia Railway Station through Bui Vien, Lach Tray, To Hieu, and Ton Duc Thang.
Older maps and tickets may still describe the address as Vinh Niem Ward, Le Chan District. The current official tourism listing uses An Bien Ward; the station name, 15 Bui Vien address and map pin identify the same terminal more reliably than the ward label alone.
Do not assume that every bus advertised from Hai Phong to Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh, or another popular destination uses Vinh Niem. Limousine services in particular often collect passengers from an operator office or a prearranged address.
For Hanoi, check whether the ticket ends at Gia Lam, Yen Nghia, Nuoc Ngam or another operator stop; none of these names means an Old Quarter hotel drop-off. For Ninh Binh, establish whether the vehicle ends in the city, Tam Coc or another district. For Sapa or Lao Cai, confirm which of those two places is the final stop and whether a local connection is included.
Vinh Niem does not publish one dependable timetable for every company. Reconfirm the operator, counter or kiosk, travel date, departure time, vehicle type, luggage allowance and final drop-off. A station being open does not mean a particular ticket counter is staffed or a seat is available.
Thuong Ly Bus Station
Thuong Ly is an active coach terminal on the western side of the urban center, at 52 Duong Ha Noi. Older maps and articles may still show So Dau Ward or a different street reference, so use the full address and the operator’s map pin.

- Useful city-bus connections: Route 16C links Thuong Ly with Dong Bai ferry; Route 16B passes Thuong Ly and has an airport-area stop on Le Hong Phong on its way to Pha Rung; Route 18B links the station with Duong Ao ferry.
For Cat Ba, Route 16C terminates at Dong Bai on Cat Hai Island. From there, take the ferry to Cai Vieng on Cat Ba Island, then use island bus 14 or arrange another ride to Cat Ba town. A through coach or transfer may use a different pickup point and ticketing arrangement. Check the day’s timetable and the last practical onward connection before leaving.
Outlying bus stations
Vinh Bao Bus Station
Vinh Bao remains an active transport point for the Vinh Bao area and nearby communities. It is not a convenient substitute for Vinh Niem or Thuong Ly when your hotel, flight, or railway arrival is in central Hai Phong.

Administrative place names around Vinh Bao have changed, and online listings do not always use the same wording. Ask the operator to send the exact map pin and confirm whether pickup is inside the station, at a nearby operator office, or at a roadside pickup point.
Northern Bus Station Hai Phong
Northern Bus Station is in Lưu Kiếm Ward, in the former Kênh Giang area north of the urban core. Do not use it as a general walk-up hub. Travel there only when a current operator booking identifies this exact terminal and provides a working contact.

- Location: Lưu Kiếm Ward, Hải Phòng; request the exact entrance with your booking.
Do not make a special trip to this station based only on an old directory, phone number, or generic route list. Reconfirm the departure on the day of travel and ask where the vehicle will wait.
Check the destination terminal as well
For example, Hai Au offers Vinh Niem–Gia Lam and Thuong Ly–Nuoc Ngam services. Gia Lam and Nuoc Ngam are different Hanoi terminals; neither route name promises a hotel drop-off in the Old Quarter. Check the final stop and onward journey before choosing the departure from Hai Phong.
Old bus-station names still found online
Niem Nghia Bus Station
Niem Nghia no longer operates as the former interprovincial coach terminal. Its fixed-route coach services were reassigned in 2021. The name can still appear as a city-bus stop or local landmark, so ask whether a booking refers to a roadside pickup point rather than a terminal.
Cau Rao Bus Station
The former Cau Rao interprovincial station closed in 2020 to make way for the Cau Rao bridge project, and its services were moved to other terminals. “Cau Rao” may now describe the surrounding area or a public-bus stop; it should not be interpreted as the old coach station.
Tam Bac Bus Station
Tam Bac closed as an interprovincial terminal in 2015. Its routes were reassigned, including to the newly built Thuong Ly terminal and to Niem Nghia at that time. If an old route page still names Tam Bac, ask the operator for its current Hai Phong departure point.
Lac Long Bus Station
Lac Long no longer functions as an interprovincial coach terminal. The old name or site may still appear as a landmark or public-bus stop, so do not use it as a departure point unless a current operator gives you an exact pickup location.
How to confirm the correct departure point
- Get the exact Vietnamese station or office name. “Hai Phong bus station” is not a usable pickup instruction.
- Ask for the full address and a map pin. This is especially important where old ward or district names still appear online.
- Confirm the pickup type. Ask whether you should wait inside the terminal, at a ticket office, at your hotel, or beside a named road.
- Check the departure time and when your operator asks you to arrive. Also confirm the vehicle type, final drop-off point, and whether any ferry or vehicle change is required.
- Ask about luggage before paying. Large suitcases, bicycles, and bulky items may need advance approval or an extra fee.
- Reconfirm around holidays. Timetables, pickup points, and vehicle allocations can change when roads or ferry terminals are busy.

Getting to and from the station
A taxi or ride-hailing car is usually the simplest choice when you have luggage. Enter the full station address, compare the driver’s destination with your map pin, and specify the entrance if your operator has supplied one.
