Hai Phong to Halong Bay Day Cruise: Routes and Practical Tips

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

A Halong Bay day cruise from Hai Phong lets you visit the bay and return to the city that evening. A six-hour cruise combines Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave and Titov Island, while a shorter private route visits Thien Cung, Dau Go and Ba Hang. Choose by the places you want to see and the time you can spend away from your hotel.

The advertised cruise duration is time on the bay, not the full trip from Hai Phong. Allow additional time for the drive, check-in and return journey. Confirm the boat, port and pickup arrangement before paying, especially if you want to finish in Hanoi or connect with a flight.

Shared or private: which arrangement fits?

A shared cruise for a scheduled day out

A shared boat suits travelers who are happy to follow a fixed timetable and visit the sights with other passengers. Our Halong Bay day tour offers Standard and Premium packages, with lunch, entrance fees and a kayak or bamboo-boat activity included.

The Hai Phong schedule uses a late-morning pickup, a cruise from around noon to early evening, and an evening return to the city. Use the pickup time and address on your confirmation rather than arriving at a general meeting point from an old description. Check the selected pickup and drop-off cities when reviewing the final transfer-inclusive price.

A private boat for your own group

A private six-hour Halong Bay cruise gives your group its own boat and guide on the Sung Sot, Luon and Titov route. Departure arrangements are more flexible, but the full route still needs enough time before the attractions close and the boat returns to port. A late-afternoon start will not fit the same program.

There is no reliable group-size rule at which private automatically becomes cheaper. Compare complete quotations for the same date, passenger ages, meals and route. Our private cruise packages price the road vehicle separately, so include both outward and return transport in that comparison.

A private car to the port does not make the cruise private. If exclusivity matters, make sure the quotation specifies a private boat as well as any private road transfer.

Choose the stops before choosing the length

Six hours: Sung Sot, Luon Cave and Titov

  • Sung Sot Cave: a walk through large limestone chambers, with stairs between the pier and cave entrance and further walking inside.
  • Luon Cave: a water-level passage visited by kayak or a rowed bamboo boat, rather than a cave you explore on foot.
  • Titov Island: a beach stop with an optional climb to a viewpoint. You can choose a less strenuous visit instead of climbing.

This route works well if you want several different activities in one day. The time at each stop is limited, so decide which activities matter most and follow the guide’s return time. An included stop does not mean unlimited time for both swimming and climbing.

Four hours: Thien Cung, Dau Go and Ba Hang

The private four-hour cruise follows a different route, with Thien Cung and Dau Go caves, a kayak or bamboo-boat activity at Ba Hang, and sightseeing past limestone islets. It does not simply compress the Sung Sot–Titov program into less time.

This option may fit a shorter day, provided the road journey and approved departure time also work. Tell us your earliest pickup and latest acceptable return before booking. A shorter cruise can still involve cave stairs, boarding steps and outdoor activity; it is not automatically the easier physical option.

Pickup, return and onward travel

Give the full address of your Hai Phong hotel and say whether you want to return there, finish at another hotel or continue to another city. Mixed-city pickup and drop-off can require a different vehicle and an additional charge. Have the full arrangement confirmed rather than assuming the same driver stays with you throughout.

If you are meeting the boat yourself, obtain the exact port, operator’s lounge and check-in deadline. For a package that already includes the correct road transfer, there is no need to book another car separately.

A flight on the same evening needs a generous margin after disembarkation, the drive to Cat Bi Airport and the airline’s check-in deadline. Do not build the connection around the earliest possible return. If the timing is tight, choose a different sailing arrangement or fly the following day.

Swimming, stairs and access

A calm-looking beach is not a guarantee that swimming is safe for a non-swimmer. You can enjoy the cruise without swimming. Tell the guide your ability and choose a shore visit or another suitable activity; do not enter the water simply because swimming appears on the itinerary.

Wear a properly fitted, fastened life jacket for kayaking or a bamboo-boat outing and follow the crew’s instructions. Supervise children closely around water. A life jacket reduces risk but does not replace supervision or make every activity suitable for everyone.

Sung Sot involves stairs and a cave walk, while the Titov viewpoint requires a substantial climb. If anyone has limited mobility, discuss boarding, toilets and the proposed excursions before booking. Ask whether staying aboard during an activity is possible and how that will be managed; do not assume every boat offers the same access or assistance.

Meals and the final cost

Check whether your chosen package serves a set meal or buffet. Tell us about vegetarian requirements, allergies and other restrictions when booking, then reconfirm the agreed meal before departure. Explain the ingredients you need to avoid rather than relying on a general label, and have any essential preparation requirements confirmed in advance.

Compare the total payable amount, including road transfers, entrance tickets, lunch, the selected water activity and any child, solo-traveler or mixed-city charge. Drinks and personal purchases may be separate. Use the price for your actual date and passenger details rather than an old advertised starting price.

What to bring

  • Secure footwear with grip for boarding and cave steps.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, plus a light rain layer when needed.
  • A change of clothes, swimwear and a small towel if you plan water activities.
  • A waterproof pouch or dry bag for your phone and valuables.
  • A refillable water bottle; avoid bringing single-use plastic items onto the bay.
  • Any personal essentials you need during the day and the identification requested in your booking instructions.

Keep belongings compact and take your rubbish back to the designated bins. If you buy souvenirs, ask the material and price before paying. Avoid coral products and purchases from small vendor boats approaching the cruise ship.

Before departure

Check the weather and any operator message before leaving your hotel. If sailing conditions disrupt the trip, confirm the revised arrangement and the applicable cancellation terms. A private boat still depends on safe operating conditions and port clearance.

For a first visit with most of the day available, the six-hour route combines a cave walk, a water activity and an island stop. Choose the four-hour route when its different sights and shorter cruise suit your schedule. The most useful booking details are your pickup address, group ages, preferred activities and any onward-travel deadline.
