Hai Phong to Ao Tien Port: Transport and Ferry Planning

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

The road journey from central Hai Phong to Ao Tien Port is approximately 100–105 kilometers. A private car normally needs about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes, depending on the pickup point, traffic and stops. For a fixed ferry departure, a private transfer is the easiest option; a direct limousine or shared van is cheaper but gives you less control over the pickup and arrival time.

Ao Tien is the main mainland passenger terminal for boats to Co To, Quan Lan, Minh Chau and Thanh Lan, with additional services to Ngoc Vung, Ban Sen and other island communities. Ferry schedules and fares change by operator, season, weather and passenger demand, so use the prices below as planning figures and reconfirm the exact sailing before leaving Hai Phong.

Hai Phong to Ao Tien Port at a glance

  • Road distance: Approximately 100–105 kilometers from central Hai Phong.
  • Typical car time: Around 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes.
  • Recommended departure from Hai Phong: About three hours before the ferry, or earlier on summer weekends and Vietnamese public holidays.
  • Best for families and luggage: A private car with a confirmed pickup time.
  • Lower-cost option: A direct limousine or shared van that specifically confirms Ao Tien Port as the drop-off point.
  • Main island routes: Co To, Quan Lan, Minh Chau and Thanh Lan.
  • Tickets required: A ferry ticket plus the Ao Tien passenger-port fee, unless the seller clearly states that the fee is included.

Where is Ao Tien Port?

Ao Tien Passenger Port is in Van Don, Quang Ninh, on the mainland side of Bai Tu Long Bay. It began commercial operations on March 1, 2023, replacing Cai Rong as the principal tourist departure point for many Van Don and Co To island routes.

The port covers nearly 30 hectares and was designed with five piers, a passenger terminal, ticket counters, waiting areas and supporting services. Older map listings may still show the address as Ha Long Commune, Van Don District, while newer administrative references use Van Don Special Zone. These names refer to the same general port area.

How to drive from Hai Phong to Ao Tien Port

Cars normally leave central Hai Phong, cross Bach Dang Bridge and continue on the Hai Phong–Ha Long–Van Don expressway. After leaving the expressway in Van Don, follow current road signs and live navigation toward Ao Tien Port.

The fastest route is straightforward, but the estimated time shown by a map app is only the driving time. Add time for city pickup, toll gates, a rest stop if needed, parking, luggage unloading and terminal check-in. Roadworks, summer traffic and holiday congestion can also lengthen the journey.

Important: Ao Tien Port and Cai Rong Port are close to each other but are not the same terminal. Follow the port written on the current ferry ticket rather than an old travel article, saved driver message or outdated map screenshot.

Transportation from Hai Phong to Ao Tien Port

Private car

A private car is the most reliable choice when you have a fixed boat departure, several suitcases, children, older travelers or a hotel pickup outside the usual shared-van area. The driver collects you at the requested address and takes you directly to the passenger terminal.

Choose the vehicle according to both passenger count and luggage. A car that technically has enough seats may have very little suitcase space when every seat is occupied. When requesting a transfer, provide the exact pickup address, ferry departure time, number of passengers and luggage quantity.

Direct limousine or shared van

Some limousine and shared-van companies operate between Hai Phong and Van Don and can drop passengers at Ao Tien Port. This can be a practical option for one or two travelers, but not every Hai Phong–Quang Ninh service enters the terminal.

Before paying, confirm all of the following:

  • The exact pickup point in Hai Phong.
  • Whether the vehicle drops you at Ao Tien Port or only at a road junction or Van Don office.
  • The expected terminal arrival time, not only the vehicle’s advertised departure time.
  • The luggage allowance.
  • What happens if the ferry is rescheduled or suspended.

Shared vehicles may collect other passengers before joining the expressway, so allow more margin than you would for a private car.

Taxi or app-based car

A taxi can make the trip, but this is a long interprovincial journey. Agree on the full fare before departure and ask whether tolls, parking and waiting time are included. An app may show a provisional fare but not guarantee that a driver will accept the trip.

For the return journey, do not assume that a suitable car will be waiting at the port. Pre-arrange the pickup when your island ferry and onward travel are time-sensitive.

Self-drive car

Self-driving gives you flexibility and uses the same expressway route as a private transfer. Check the live route before departure, keep enough fuel for the return journey and allow time to find the correct parking area. Parking arrangements and charges can change, so follow instructions at the terminal.

Do not leave passports, cash or electronics in the vehicle while you are on the island.

Motorbike

A motorbike cannot use the expressway route used by cars. The non-expressway journey is roughly 120 kilometers and commonly takes three hours or more before rest stops. It is suitable only for experienced riders with a valid license, appropriate insurance and confidence in long-distance Vietnamese traffic.

Check whether the island ferry accepts a motorbike before riding to the port. Passenger space on a high-speed boat does not automatically mean vehicle space is available.

Train

There is no practical direct train from Hai Phong to Ao Tien Port. Road transport is the sensible option for this journey.

How early should you leave Hai Phong?

For most travelers, a sensible plan is to leave Hai Phong about three hours before the ferry departure. This allows approximately two hours for the road journey and 45–60 minutes for unloading, ticket collection, ID checks and boarding.

Leave earlier when traveling on Friday afternoon, a summer weekend, a Vietnamese public holiday or with a large group. A shared limousine also needs more margin because its pickup circuit may take longer than expected.

Do not schedule a flight, international connection or non-refundable onward service immediately after the return ferry. Weather-related changes can affect both the sailing time and the number of boats operating that day.

Where can you go from Ao Tien Port?

Co To Island

Co To is the best-known longer crossing from Ao Tien. It has a developed island town, beaches, accommodation and road transport. High-speed services usually make the crossing in roughly 60–90 minutes, depending on the vessel and sea conditions.

Quan Lan and Minh Chau

Quan Lan and Minh Chau are separate arrival ports serving different parts of the same long island area. Choose the port according to your hotel rather than selecting whichever ticket appears first. Arriving at the wrong side can add a substantial island transfer.

The sea journey is commonly about 45–75 minutes. Ask the accommodation which arrival port is more convenient before booking the ferry.

Ngoc Vung Island

Ngoc Vung has fewer departures than Co To or Quan Lan. Different local and high-speed vessels may operate, which explains the wide variation in published fares and journey times. Confirm the return sailing before committing to accommodation or a same-day plan.

Thanh Lan Island

Direct Ao Tien–Thanh Lan service is more limited than the main Co To route. Some travelers instead travel to Co To and connect onward. Check whether the ticket is direct, the total journey time and whether a separate island connection is required.

Ban Sen and local routes

Ban Sen and several community routes have smaller, less frequent services. These are not good routes for relying on a generic online timetable. Contact the operator or local accommodation for the exact travel date.

Ao Tien passenger-port fee

The passenger-port fee is normally separate from the ferry fare. The current public rates checked in September 2026 are:

  • Ages 6 to under 70: VND 50,000 per person.
  • Children ages 3–5: VND 20,000 per person.
  • Passengers ages 70–80: VND 20,000 per person.
  • Children under 3 and passengers over 80: Free.

Residents and people working on specified islands may have separate concessions. Foreign visitors should plan on the standard public rate that applies to their age. Ask whether the ticket seller has already collected the port fee to avoid paying twice.

Indicative ferry fares from Ao Tien Port

The following figures are adult, one-way planning prices checked in September 2026. They are not a permanent tariff. Operators use different vessels, seat classes, child age bands and holiday policies.

  • Ao Tien to Co To: Around VND 300,000–350,000 for a standard or Eco ticket. Premium or VIP seating may cost up to VND 500,000.
  • Ao Tien to Quan Lan: Approximately VND 200,000–250,000.
  • Ao Tien to Minh Chau: Approximately VND 180,000–220,000.
  • Ao Tien to Ngoc Vung: Some local-boat listings start around VND 80,000, while current high-speed listings are approximately VND 150,000–180,000.
  • Ao Tien to Thanh Lan: Commonly around VND 280,000–300,000 when a direct service is available.
  • Ao Tien to Ban Sen: Approximately VND 70,000–100,000 on listed local services.

Children’s fares require separate confirmation. The original article used one age rule for every route, but current operators apply different bands. Some calculate by age, some by seat requirement, and some ask for a birth document. Send each child’s birth year when requesting a quote.

How to check the ferry schedule

Do not build the journey around a permanent timetable copied from a blog. The number of departures can change by weekday, season, demand, operator maintenance and weather.

  1. Choose the destination and ask your accommodation which island port is most convenient.
  2. Search the exact travel date with the ferry operator or a reputable ticket seller.
  3. Confirm the departure terminal is Ao Tien, not Cai Rong, Hon Gai or another port.
  4. Book the return sailing as well as the outbound trip, especially during summer and holidays.
  5. Recheck the sailing the day before departure and again before leaving Hai Phong when poor weather is forecast.

Keep the operator’s contact details and electronic ticket available offline. Mobile reception can be weaker during the sea crossing and on less-developed parts of the islands.

Documents and boarding requirements

Foreign travelers should carry an original, valid passport. Passenger details on the ticket should match the identification document used for boarding. Operators may request the full name, date or year of birth and passport number when issuing the ticket.

For children, carry the passport or other accepted birth and identity document requested by the operator. This is especially important when claiming a reduced child fare.

Arrive at least 45–60 minutes before departure unless the operator gives a different check-in deadline. Keep your passport, phone and ticket in a small bag rather than inside checked or stored luggage.

Important things to know before traveling

  • Weather can stop the boats: Provincial authorities may suspend marine passenger operations when conditions are unsafe. Road transport arriving on time does not guarantee that the ferry will sail.
  • Book the correct island pier: Quan Lan and Minh Chau serve different hotel areas. Ask your accommodation before purchasing.
  • Protect against seasickness: Take your usual medication early enough to work, choose a suitable seat and avoid a heavy meal immediately before boarding.
  • Watch your own luggage: Label bags clearly and keep valuables, medicine and travel documents with you.
  • Confirm large or unusual items: Bicycles, motorbikes, surf equipment and oversized luggage need advance approval and may incur an extra fee.
  • Carry Vietnamese dong: Electronic payment is common, but cash remains useful for port fees, small purchases and island transfers.
  • Keep a flexible return plan: Do not rely on the final ferry of the day when you have an important flight or train connection.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ao Tien Port the same as Cai Rong Port?

No. They are separate terminals in Van Don. Most tourist island routes moved to Ao Tien, but some local or special services may still use another port. Always follow the current ticket.

Can I buy a ferry ticket after arriving at Ao Tien?

Tickets may be available at the port, but same-day purchase is risky during summer weekends, public holidays and limited-service periods. Advance booking is more important for the return trip because being on an island gives you fewer alternatives.

Can I travel from Hai Phong to Co To in one day?

The transfer is possible in one travel day, but it is not a sensible sightseeing day trip. As a planning estimate, allow roughly 3.5–4.5 hours from your Hai Phong pickup to arrival on Co To after road travel, terminal procedures and the sea crossing. Stay at least one night to make the journey worthwhile.

Which is better, Quan Lan Port or Minh Chau Port?

Neither is universally better. Minh Chau is more convenient for accommodation around Minh Chau, while Quan Lan Port better serves Quan Lan village and nearby areas. Ask the hotel which port reduces the island road transfer.

What happens if the ferry is suspended?

The operator will provide the available rescheduling or refund instructions under its own policy. Contact your accommodation and road-transfer provider immediately. Keep one flexible night in the wider itinerary during periods of unsettled weather.
