For travelers, “Halong” can mean the World Heritage bay, a cruise route, a port or the wider tourism area around Bai Chay, Tuan Chau and Hong Gai. These places are connected by road but are not within walking distance of one another. Select the cruise first, then choose the hotel and transfer that fit its actual departure point.
How many days do you need in Halong?
One day
A one-day visit is suitable when your schedule is tight. From Hanoi, it becomes a long combined road-and-boat day, so the cruise length must fit the pickup time and return journey. A six-hour route generally gives more time for caves, kayaking or a bamboo boat and an island stop than a short sightseeing route.
Travelers starting in Hai Phong or already staying in Halong spend less time on the road. Avoid scheduling a flight, train or another important connection immediately after the cruise because disembarkation, luggage collection and traffic can run later than expected.
Two days and one night
This is the most balanced duration for a first visit. An overnight cruise adds sunset, dinner and early-morning scenery. A hotel-based plan gives you a larger room, more privacy and a flexible evening on land, but it requires separate transfers to and from the marina.
Three days and two nights
Choose three days when the second day adds places or activities you genuinely want. Some two-night cruises use a smaller day boat for a pearl-farming area, another cave or a quieter kayaking location while the main vessel returns to port. Compare the full second-day program instead of assuming every three-day cruise offers the same experience.
Another practical option is one night on a cruise and one night in Bai Chay or near Quang Ninh Museum. This combines time on the bay with local food, a museum visit and an evening on land.
Best time to visit Halong
There is no month that guarantees sunshine, clear visibility or calm water. The most suitable season depends on whether you prioritize mild temperatures, swimming, quieter travel dates or a lower risk of severe summer weather.
April to May
These months are usually warm and suitable for open decks, cave walks and viewpoints. Sunshine is common, but mist, light rain and changing visibility are still possible. Carry both sun protection and a light rain layer.
June to August
Summer is hot, humid and popular with Vietnamese families. Weekends and school-holiday dates can be busy, while strong sun makes hats, sunscreen and drinking water important. Heavy rain, tropical depressions and typhoons can cause cruises to be rerouted, delayed or suspended by the authorities.
A sunny morning in Hanoi does not confirm that every bay activity will operate. Follow the notice from the cruise company and port authority, and keep the day after a weather-sensitive trip flexible when possible.
September to November
Temperatures often become more comfortable for walking and spending time on open decks. Tropical weather can still affect early autumn, so continue checking the marine forecast. This period can offer a useful balance between outdoor conditions and lower heat.
December to March
Winter and early spring can be cool, cloudy and misty. The limestone scenery remains atmospheric, but long-distance views are less predictable and swimming may not be comfortable. Bring a warm layer for early mornings, evenings and exposed decks.
Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay?
Halong Bay for the classic first visit
Halong Bay has the widest choice of day cruises and overnight boats. The shorter classic route commonly covers Thien Cung Cave, Dau Go Cave, Ba Hang, Incense Burner Islet and Fighting Cocks Islet. A longer popular route covers the Sung Sot Cave area, Luon Cave and Ti Top Island, although an individual cruise may stop at only part of the official route.
Best for: First-time visitors who want well-known caves, islands and viewpoints, with many boat and departure-time choices.
Consider: The best-known stops can be crowded on weekends, public holidays and summer dates.
Lan Ha Bay for Cat Ba-side scenery and water activities
Lan Ha Bay lies beside Cat Ba Island and forms part of the same UNESCO property. Many programs emphasize kayaking, swimming, sheltered coves and the Cat Ba side of the archipelago. Some boats leave from Tuan Chau, while others use ports in Hai Phong or Cat Ba, so the bay name alone does not identify the correct transfer destination.
Selected licensed routes can connect Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, but most cruises still follow one defined program. Do not assume a boat covers both bays simply because its marketing refers to the wider World Heritage area.
Best for: Travelers combining the cruise with Cat Ba and visitors who prioritize kayaking, swimming or smaller coves.
Consider: Departure points and transfer arrangements vary more than many first-time visitors expect.
Bai Tu Long Bay for a different route with fewer departures
Bai Tu Long Bay lies northeast of the busiest central Halong routes. Cruise choices are usually fewer, but it can suit travelers who prefer a different route and are comfortable with less flexibility in dates, cabin categories and transfers.
Best for: Repeat visitors, couples and travelers who value the route more than the largest choice of vessels.
Consider: A Bai Tu Long itinerary is not guaranteed to be empty or completely quiet, especially during holiday periods.
Confirm the departure port before booking transport
Halong International Cruise Port
This port is in Bai Chay, close to hotels, restaurants and evening entertainment. It is convenient when you plan to stay in the main tourism area. Do not confuse a local bay cruise departure with an international ocean-cruise call; send the driver the exact cruise name and meeting instructions.
Tuan Chau International Marina
Tuan Chau is a separate island area connected to the mainland by road. Many Halong day and overnight cruises use this marina. Staying nearby can reduce morning transfer risk when the check-in time is early.
Other Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba departure points
Some Lan Ha Bay products depart from other ports in Hai Phong or Cat Ba rather than central Halong. The hotel name, bay name or cruise brand is not enough to identify the pickup route. Ask for the port name, check-in counter and local contact in writing.
Places to visit in and around Halong
Thien Cung Cave, Dau Go Cave and the shorter classic route
A shorter Halong sightseeing route may include Thien Cung Cave, Dau Go Cave, Ba Hang and well-known limestone formations such as Incense Burner Islet and Fighting Cocks Islet. It suits travelers who have limited time, but it should not be described as the same experience as a six-hour route.
Check whether the program includes a cave walk, a small-boat activity and lunch. A low headline price may cover less time on the water or exclude an activity that another cruise includes.
Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave and Ti Top Island
These are among the best-known stops on the longer classic Halong route. Sung Sot Cave involves a substantial walk, stairs and uneven surfaces. Luon Cave is normally explored by kayak or bamboo boat when conditions permit. Ti Top Island combines a small beach with a steep stairway to a panoramic viewpoint.
Travelers with knee, balance, heart or mobility concerns should ask about stairs and whether remaining on the vessel is possible. Swimming, kayaking and island landings can be suspended even when the cruise itself continues.
Cua Van Floating Cultural Center
Cua Van is associated with Halong Bay’s historic floating fishing communities. The visitor experience centers on a floating cultural facility, traditional community heritage and exploration by kayak or bamboo boat when included in the program.
Cua Van belongs to a separate official sightseeing route with places such as Tien Ong Cave and Ba Ham Lake. It is not part of the common short route and should not be assumed to appear in a standard six-hour cruise. Confirm Cua Van Floating Cultural Center by name in the written itinerary.
Quang Ninh Museum
Quang Ninh Museum introduces the area’s natural environment, archaeology, mining history and local culture. Its dark glass exterior is also one of the most recognizable modern buildings on the bayfront.
The museum may offer evening visits and additional cultural programs on selected dates. Daytime hours, night programs and holiday schedules can differ, so check the museum’s current notice before traveling rather than relying on an older fixed timetable.
Bai Chay Beach
Bai Chay is the most convenient urban beach for visitors staying in the main hotel and entertainment area. It works well for a walk, a relaxed afternoon or swimming when weather and safety conditions allow. Water color and beach conditions vary with tide, rain and marine conditions.
Tuan Chau Island
Tuan Chau is best known as a major cruise-departure area. Staying near the marina is practical when your boat has an early check-in. Hotels, restaurants and entertainment facilities operate on the island, but individual shows and attractions can change schedules or close seasonally.
Bai Chay Old Quarter
The area promoted as Halong Old Quarter or Bai Chay Old Quarter consists of modern commercial streets with architecture inspired by older Vietnamese towns. It can be useful for photographs, cafes and an evening walk, but it is not a preserved historic quarter comparable with Hoi An. Shop occupancy and evening activity vary.
VUI-Fest Ha Long
VUI-Fest Ha Long is a waterfront evening market and entertainment area in Bai Chay, with food stalls, shopping and changing performances. It is a more useful current evening reference than older, vague directions to “Halong Night Market.”
Event times, fireworks, light shows and individual stalls can change by date and season. Check the same-day program before making a special trip for one particular performance.
Activities and practical limitations
Kayaking or bamboo boat
Kayaking gives you more independence, while a bamboo boat is easier for travelers who prefer not to paddle. Wear the life jacket correctly, protect phones in a waterproof pouch and follow the crew’s route. Expect the lower part of your clothing to become wet when kayaking.
Neither activity is guaranteed. Wind, tide, congestion or local safety restrictions can cause the stop to be changed or canceled.
Cave walks and island viewpoints
Caves and viewpoints can involve wet surfaces, heat, steep stairs and limited shade. Shoes with grip are safer than loose flip-flops. Ask for the walking distance and stair conditions before boarding when traveling with seniors, young children or anyone with limited mobility.
Swimming
Swimming is route- and weather-dependent. A cruise may advertise a beach or swimming stop, but authorities can restrict the activity because of waves, visibility, water conditions or congestion. Pack swimwear as an option, not as a guaranteed part of the day.
Overnight cruise
An overnight cruise suits travelers who enjoy a structured program and want sunset and early-morning time on the bay. It is less suitable for guests who need a large hotel room, flexible meal times, easy access to medical services or complete control over the schedule.
Compare the exact cabin category, window or balcony, bed layout, route, departure port, transfer, meals and activity access. A star label or the word luxury does not answer these practical questions.
Seaplane sightseeing is no longer available
Older Halong travel guides may still recommend a scenic seaplane flight. Hai Au Aviation ended its seaplane service on April 1, 2026, so a current itinerary should not be built around old booking pages or archived articles.
How to get to Halong
From Hanoi
Private cars and shared limousine services normally use the expressway. A direct journey can take a little over two hours in light traffic, but allowing about two and a half to three hours is safer when planning from a central Hanoi pickup to a specific Halong marina.
A private Hanoi to Halong transfer is useful for families, cruise luggage and direct delivery to the correct port. Shared services may cost less, but pickup zones, hotel collection, rest stops and final drop-off points vary.
Send the operator the cruise name, travel date, exact marina and required check-in time. A reservation that states only Halong is not precise enough for a fixed boarding deadline.
From Hai Phong and Cat Bi Airport
Central Hai Phong to the main Halong tourism area is about 50 kilometers and commonly around one hour by private road transfer under normal conditions. The exact journey depends on the pickup address, traffic and whether the destination is Bai Chay, Tuan Chau or another port.
A private Hai Phong to Halong transfer can collect from a hotel, Cat Bi Airport or another confirmed address and deliver directly to the selected cruise port. When flying in on the cruise date, allow time for delays and baggage collection. The scheduled landing time is not the time you will leave the airport.
Choose the vehicle by both passenger count and luggage volume. A vehicle filled to its registered passenger capacity may have little room for large suitcases.
From Van Don Airport
Van Don Airport can be convenient when a suitable flight operates, but flight frequency and onward transport may be more limited than at Hanoi or Hai Phong. Confirm the flight, road transfer and cruise check-in as one complete connection before buying a nonrefundable ticket.
By shared limousine or coach
Shared services operate from Hanoi and other northern destinations, but routes, pickup zones and luggage policies change. Confirm whether the vehicle drops at your hotel, Halong International Cruise Port, Tuan Chau Marina or only a central office. A cheap ticket is poor value if it requires another taxi and leaves too little time for boarding.
By motorbike
A motorbike journey uses non-expressway roads and takes much longer than a car using the expressway. It is suitable only for experienced riders with valid documents, protective equipment and insurance that covers the vehicle and route in Vietnam.
Getting around Halong
- Taxi or app-based car: Convenient between Bai Chay, Tuan Chau, the museum area and the cruise ports. Use the meter, app fare or an agreed total.
- Private car with driver: Efficient for several stops, luggage or a direct hotel-to-marina transfer.
- Electric tourist vehicle: Useful on selected local routes, but operating areas, hours and fares can change.
- Local bus: The lowest-cost option when the route fits, but less convenient with luggage or a fixed boarding deadline.
Do not judge distance only by the destination name. A museum, beach, hotel and cruise port all listed under Halong may still require a bridge crossing or a substantial drive.
Where to stay in Halong
Bai Chay
Bai Chay is the easiest base for first-time visitors who want hotels, restaurants, the urban beach and evening activity. It is also convenient for Halong International Cruise Port. The trade-off is a busier tourism atmosphere, particularly on weekends and summer holidays.
Best for: Travelers combining a day cruise with restaurants, the beach or VUI-Fest.
Tuan Chau
Stay on or near Tuan Chau when your cruise departs early from Tuan Chau International Marina. Reducing the morning road transfer lowers the risk of missing check-in. Evening dining and shopping choices may be more limited than in central Bai Chay.
Best for: Early departures, families carrying luggage and travelers who prioritize port convenience.
Hong Gai or Hon Gai side
This side of the bayfront suits travelers interested in Quang Ninh Museum, waterfront public spaces and local restaurants. It is farther from Tuan Chau, so allow additional road time when the boat boards there.
Best for: Museum visits, local food and travelers who do not need to stay beside the main tourist beach.
Hotel or overnight cruise?
Choose a hotel when privacy, room size, flexible meals or easy access to land-based services matters most. Choose an overnight cruise when the main goal is to spend the evening and early morning among the islands. Families with young children, older travelers and guests prone to seasickness should compare the cabin, tender-boat access and emergency arrangements before deciding.
What to eat in Halong
Halong is known for seafood, but freshness and transparent pricing matter more than an oversized menu. When seafood is sold by weight, confirm whether the price is per kilogram, the total weight selected and whether cooking or service charges are separate before preparation begins.
Hand-pounded squid cake (chả mực)
Chả mực is a signature Halong specialty. Squid is pounded, seasoned and fried into golden patties with a springy texture. It is commonly served with sticky rice, rice rolls or noodles. Buy from a busy, reputable seller and ask how it should be stored when taking it away.
Halong seafood noodles
Seafood noodle bowls may contain squid cake, shrimp, mantis shrimp, fish or other seafood depending on the restaurant and market supply. Ask about shellfish, fish sauce and other allergens even when they are not obvious in the broth.
Cù kỳ
Cù kỳ is a local crustacean known for its large claws. It may be steamed, grilled, cooked with tamarind or served with noodles. Choose a restaurant that explains the price and portion before preparation.
Oysters and snails
Grilled oysters with scallion oil and stir-fried snail dishes are common local choices. Ask how the dish is seasoned if you have allergies or prefer less chili. For shellfish sold by weight, agree on the total before it enters the kitchen.
Sá sùng
Sá sùng is an expensive regional marine ingredient sold fresh or dried. It may be grilled, fried or used to add sweetness to broth. Ask the current price before ordering and check customs or airline restrictions before carrying dried seafood internationally.
Chả rươi and other seasonal dishes
Chả rươi, or sandworm cake, may appear in cooler months, but availability varies. Treat seasonal dishes as a local discovery rather than a meal that can be guaranteed throughout the year.
Sam biển requires careful sourcing and preparation
Sam biển, commonly translated as horseshoe crab, appears on some local menus but should not be treated as a casual dish to order anywhere. The toxic lookalike so biển can contain tetrodotoxin, which normal cooking does not reliably destroy. Choose only a reputable restaurant with clear sourcing and experienced preparation.
The folk advice about eating sam “in pairs” is not a food-safety measure. Correct species identification, sourcing and preparation are what matter.

Day 2: Join the morning activity if desired, check out of the cabin, have the scheduled meal and disembark for the onward transfer.

Alternatively, combine one overnight cruise with one hotel night. This can be more useful than repeating similar onboard activities when you also want the museum, local food or an evening in Bai Chay.
