Hanoi Aquariums Compared: Lotte Westlake or Times City?

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

For most visitors, choosing a Hanoi aquarium comes down to Lotte World Aquarium at Lotte Mall Westlake or Vinpearl Aquarium at Times City. Choose Lotte if you are staying around West Lake or want its themed journey from rivers to the sea. Choose Times City if the southeastern location is convenient or your children also want the separate VinKE indoor play and career activities.

Both are indoor attractions that fit a relaxed half-day with a meal. You do not need to visit both on a short Hanoi trip. Allow roughly two hours inside your chosen aquarium as a starting plan, then add time for a particular presentation, a slow-moving child or a separately booked activity.

The practical differences

  • Lotte: Lotte Mall Westlake, with entrances at 272 Vo Chi Cong and 683 Lac Long Quan. The aquarium occupies basement levels B1 and B2. Its usual hours are 9:30 a.m.–10 p.m. daily, with last admission one hour before closing.
  • Times City: basement B1 of Vincom Mega Mall Times City, 458 Minh Khai. Usual hours are 10 a.m.–10 p.m. Monday–Friday and 9:30 a.m.–10 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
  • For an aquarium-only outing: compare the journey from your hotel and the exhibits that interest you. A longer taxi ride is not automatically justified by a larger animal count in an advertisement.
  • For children who want active play afterward: Times City’s aquarium and VinKE can be combined, but the ticket must cover both.

Give your driver the full mall and attraction name. Lotte World Aquarium is at Lotte Mall Westlake, not Lotte Center on Lieu Giai. Vinpearl Aquarium Times City is also separate from the VinWonders attractions in Ocean City. Similar company names do not mean nearby entrances.

If you are considering a SkyAqua combination ticket, the Lotte Hanoi Sky observation deck is a separate stop at 54 Lieu Giai. Allow transport time between the buildings and confirm the aquarium voucher’s validity, nationality category and any child-height or weekend supplement before buying.

Lotte World Aquarium: follow the water from inland to ocean

Lotte’s route has four named areas: Fresh Town, Beach Walk, Sea Adventure and Ocean Square. The sequence gives children a useful thread to follow rather than treating every tank as an unrelated stop.

Fresh Town and Beach Walk

Fresh Town takes inspiration from Vietnamese inland landscapes, including mountain water, cultivated terraces and tropical river environments. Pause at a freshwater tank and compare how fish move and feed before continuing toward the coastal displays.

Beach Walk introduces mangroves, reefs and the relationship between coastal communities and the sea. It includes an interpretation of a Ca Ong shrine, connected with coastal whale-veneration traditions. That cultural detail makes the route more specific to Vietnam than a simple sequence of fish tanks.

Sea Adventure and Ocean Square

Sea Adventure changes the setting to a shipwreck and underwater exploration, with displays including jellyfish and rays. Take time at the smaller tanks as well as the dramatic viewing areas; a child’s interest may settle on one animal rather than the largest tank.

Ocean Square is the final gathering area, around the main tank and the sea-lion and penguin exhibits. It is the place to pause for scheduled activity rather than rush directly toward the exit. Check the day’s presentation board when you arrive so you can reach the right area at the right time.

Presentations and extra experiences

Lotte offers animal presentations and lists experiences such as koi feeding, touch-pool activities, marine classes and behind-the-scenes visits. Some experiences involve separate payment or arrangements. A normal admission ticket should not be treated as permission to join every activity on the website.

For an English-speaking family, ask about the language and duration of a class before paying for it. Watching a presentation and joining a structured educational session require different levels of language support. If you only want to look at the exhibits, a standard visit can remain simple.

Times City: aquarium, penguins and an optional play session

Vinpearl Aquarium’s route covers freshwater displays, a reptile area and saltwater exhibits with an underwater tunnel. The penguin area is a major stop in its own right, so leave time to watch normal behavior instead of only moving through for a photograph.

The entertainment program includes underwater mermaid performances, feeding presentations and reptile activities. Treat the schedule displayed at the entrance as part of planning your route. There is no advantage in arriving just after the one event your child particularly wanted to see.

For an afternoon visit, the usual program includes penguin feeding around 3 p.m. followed by a mermaid performance around 3:30 p.m. These make a practical pair when operating: see the penguins, allow time to change areas, then continue through the remaining exhibits. Reconfirm those sessions on the day rather than relying on them for a tightly timed departure.

VinKE is a separate decision

VinKE adds indoor games and role-play activities based on occupations such as firefighting, cooking and media work. It can suit a child who wants to do something active after watching animals. It also turns a short aquarium visit into a longer family outing.

Buy an aquarium-only ticket if that is all you want. A VinKE ticket alone does not replace aquarium admission, and a meal or souvenir offer does not necessarily add access to the play area. Check the exact venue names in a combination ticket.

For children who do not speak Vietnamese, ask which role-play activities they can follow with demonstrations or an accompanying adult. Do not assume every activity has an English-speaking instructor. If the family is already tired, skip the extra play session and have a meal in the mall instead.

Tickets, child height and the real family cost

Both venues use height categories for child tickets, so measure children before comparing prices. At a height boundary, confirm the category before completing an online purchase. Do not assume that an age-based child ticket from another attraction applies here.

Lotte ticket conditions

Lotte distinguishes children from 80–140 cm and visitors above 140 cm. Its counter policy allows children under 80 cm to enter free with a paying adult, specifically for individual visitors buying directly at the counter. Check the terms of an online or group offer separately.

Compare the date-specific admission total with any activities you want to add. Tickets cover aquarium entry and sightseeing during operating hours; additional experiences and purchases can cost extra. Purchased tickets are nonrefundable, so settle the date and child categories first.

Times City planning prices

The aquarium-only tariff in the offer period ending December 31, 2026 is 210,000 VND for visitors from 140 cm and 160,000 VND for children 80–139 cm on weekdays. The listed weekend rates are 270,000 VND and 210,000 VND, respectively. Check the selected date for holiday pricing and any replacement offer.

Use those amounts for a rough admission budget, then price VinKE separately if wanted. A changing combination discount can alter the calculation, and an included food voucher only has value if you will actually use it. Add transport and food when comparing the entire outing.

Plan the visit around your child, not closing time

For a preschooler, choose one aquarium session followed by food and a rest. For an older child interested in animals, leave more time to read labels, compare habitats and watch a feeding presentation. Adults can enjoy either aquarium without adding a children’s play area.

Opening at 9:30 or 10 a.m. makes these a later-start alternative to Hanoi’s early historic-site visits. Arriving close to 10 p.m. does not leave meaningful aquarium time, and Lotte’s admission cutoff is earlier. A daytime or early-evening visit is easier to combine with normal meals and transport.

If you need a stroller or wheelchair, ask the venue for the current entrance-to-exit route, elevator access and any limitations at particular activities. A mall address by itself does not tell you whether every viewing position or extra experience is accessible.

Lotte restricts outside food, with exceptions for reasonable quantities of baby food and medically prescribed dietary food. Times City also restricts outside food and drink, with provisions for special dietary needs. Plan the main meal in the mall and clarify a necessary food exception before arriving.

Use the mall location to simplify the day

At Lotte, use the Westlake mall location for the meal and any shopping you already need. At Times City, keep the aquarium and optional VinKE visit in the same outing. Crossing Hanoi to add the other aquarium usually spends the most useful part of the day in traffic.

Both can work during ordinary rain because the attractions are indoors. During severe weather, choose according to safe access rather than assuming that an indoor destination makes the journey safe. The Hanoi heavy-rain travel plan explains when to reduce movement.

For a broader itinerary, the Hanoi with kids guide helps balance an aquarium session with sleep, meals and outdoor sightseeing. Choose the aquarium that fits your location and interests, reserve only the extras you want, and leave enough time to enjoy it slowly.
