The trek from Cat Ba National Park through Ao Ech, or Frog Pond, to Viet Hai is a full-day forest journey with uneven limestone terrain. Plan the walk, village visit and return transport together. A one-way trek is only practical when you have arranged how to leave Viet Hai afterward.
Start with a guide or the national park’s tourism desk to confirm that the trail is open and suitable for your group. Heavy rain can affect forest paths, access roads and boat services. Stay on Cat Ba the previous night if you want an early start without depending on a morning ferry connection.
Route, distance and difficulty
The journey begins at the national-park side of the island, passes through the forest and Ao Ech area, and continues to Viet Hai village. From the village, a separate road leg leads to Viet Hai pier for an arranged boat back toward Ben Beo.
Use roughly 12 kilometers as an initial planning figure for the park’s Ao Ech–Viet Hai route. Before booking, ask the guide to specify the walking distance, starting point, endpoint and whether the village-to-pier leg is included. Do not calculate the whole day from the distance to Frog Pond alone.
Expect several hours on foot, with the full outing taking much of the day once breaks and transfers are included. Fitness, heat, wet ground and the group’s pace matter more than a single promised completion time. This is a different commitment from a short viewpoint walk near the park entrance.
What the walk is like
Forest trails toward Ao Ech
The route crosses forested limestone terrain, with climbs, descents and uneven ground. Roots and rocks can become slippery after rain. Walk at a pace that leaves enough energy for the later sections instead of treating Frog Pond as the finish.
Ao Ech is a wetland within the forest. Its appearance changes with water levels and season; it is not always a full pond. Keep to the route indicated by your guide and leave plants and wildlife undisturbed.

Beyond Ao Ech, the trail continues through forest and rocky terrain to Viet Hai village. Stay with your group and agree on a turnaround or alternative plan before setting off; signs alone do not settle whether the route and time remaining suit the group.
Arrange the return boat before you hike
Viet Hai village and Viet Hai pier are separate places. Arrange lunch and rest in the village if needed, then confirm whether the road connection to the pier will be by electric vehicle, bicycle or on foot. Any extra sightseeing must leave enough time and energy to reach the boat pickup.

For a boat return toward Cat Ba town, agree on pickup at Viet Hai pier and arrival at Ben Beo pier, then arrange the final ride to your accommodation. Do not confuse Viet Hai with Cat Hai Island, which is on the mainland-connected side of the Dong Bai ferry crossing.
Get the boat operator’s contact, meeting time, fare and cancellation arrangement before entering the forest. Do not assume that an unbooked boat will be waiting when you arrive. If the return boat cannot operate, discuss another plan with the guide before starting the trek.
Tickets, a guide and what the quote includes
Ask the park or your guide about the current route fee, entry procedure, guide arrangements and any trail restrictions. You can contact the national park’s tourism desk at +84 987 632 282 to discuss the route and services.
When comparing a guided package, check whether it includes transport to the starting point, park admission, the guide, drinking water, lunch, village-to-pier transport, the boat and the return from Ben Beo. A low walking-tour price may exclude much of the journey home.
What to bring
- Footwear with good grip: use shoes suitable for wet rock and uneven ground.
- Water and food: agree on the amount and any refill or lunch stops with your guide. Bring your own snacks; do not eat unidentified plants or drink untreated water from the forest.
- Weather protection: light rain protection, sun protection and clothing suited to humid conditions.
- Insect protection: repellent and long socks or trousers can help on damp, overgrown sections.
- Communication: a charged phone, saved meeting details and a power bank. Do not rely on continuous mobile coverage.
- Personal essentials: any items you need during the day, protected from rain, plus a bag for carrying out your rubbish.
Getting to Cat Ba before the trek
If you are coming from Hai Phong, the Hai Phong to Cat Ba transfer can take you to your agreed island accommodation using vehicles on both sides of the ferry and a foot-passenger crossing. Arrange arrival the day before your hike if possible. This transfer does not include the forest trek or a return boat from Viet Hai.
Choose this route when you want a substantial day in the forest and can manage the confirmed terrain. For a shorter outing, ask the park for an open route that fits your time and ability. The most useful preparation is a clear walking plan and a confirmed way home.
