Internet in Hai Phong: Free Wi-Fi, SIM Cards and eSIMs

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

You can use free Wi-Fi at places such as Cat Bi Airport and AEON MALL Hai Phong Le Chan, but internet access across Hai Phong is not universally free. Hotels and cafes set their own guest-access conditions, while mobile data requires a local plan, a travel eSIM or roaming through your home carrier.

For a short city stay, use your accommodation’s Wi-Fi for larger downloads and keep mobile data available for maps, ride bookings and messages when you are out. Save your hotel address and pickup details offline before arrival so that finding a connection is not your first task at the airport.

Where to use Wi-Fi in Hai Phong

Cat Bi International Airport

Cat Bi offers free passenger Wi-Fi. Use the network identified by airport signs or staff, then complete any welcome or sign-in screen that appears. Network names and login steps can change, so do not rely on an old screenshot or assume that the first network containing “airport” is the correct one.

Send your arrival message while you are connected inside the terminal. Keep the driver’s name, meeting point and contact details saved; Wi-Fi access inside the airport does not guarantee a connection at the vehicle pickup point.

AEON MALL Hai Phong Le Chan

AEON MALL Hai Phong Le Chan, at 10 Vo Nguyen Giap Street, lists free Wi-Fi among its visitor services. If you are already shopping or eating there, it can be a useful place to reconnect. Ask the information desk for the current network and login instructions rather than making a separate journey just for internet access.

Your hotel and nearby cafes

Check whether Wi-Fi is included in your room booking and available in the room itself, rather than only in a lobby or lounge. At a cafe, ask for the customer network and password after ordering. Free guest Wi-Fi does not necessarily mean unrestricted public access or no sign-in requirement.

If you need to work, test a call or upload from the place where you will actually sit. A hotel’s advertised connection speed, or a 4G/5G icon on your phone, does not guarantee a stable video meeting in every room. Ask about a quieter workspace and keep another connection available for important calls.

Choose mobile data for the time between Wi-Fi stops

  • Local SIM: useful if you want a Vietnamese mobile plan and possibly a local number. Buy through an official carrier channel and bring your passport for registration. Check that your phone accepts another carrier’s SIM.
  • Travel eSIM: convenient when your device supports it and is unlocked. Check the exact phone model, Vietnam coverage and activation instructions before paying. Some plans provide data only, without a local number for ordinary calls or SMS.
  • Home-carrier roaming: keeps your existing service available, but check that Vietnam is covered, the allowance and the price before enabling it.

Compare the validity period, data allowance, any reduced-speed limit and whether hotspot sharing is allowed if you need a laptop connection. Check when the plan starts and how you would top up. Set your intended travel line as the phone’s data line; keeping your home line active may still incur roaming charges.

If Wi-Fi connects but nothing loads

  1. Confirm the network name with the venue and look for a “Sign in to network” notification or welcome page.
  2. Open a fresh browser page to see whether a login or terms screen appears.
  3. If the connection remains stuck, forget that network and join it again using the current details.
  4. Ask staff whether there is an outage, or use your mobile plan after checking the correct data line and charges.

A password-free network can still have a sign-in page. Conversely, a password-protected network can still lose its internet connection. Neither situation means you need to reset your entire phone.

Prepare for journeys to Cat Ba and the bays

Before leaving Hai Phong for Cat Ba, Lan Ha Bay or Halong Bay, download your booking confirmation, the correct port address and the onward meeting point. Onboard Wi-Fi can be intermittent, so avoid making a cruise your only chance to send urgent work or join a scheduled call.

Download the relevant map area while you have a connection. Offline Google Maps has limits: walking, cycling and public-transport directions are unavailable offline, and driving navigation needs the entire route downloaded. Save key addresses and simple meeting-point instructions as well.

Use connections sensibly

Confirm the guest network with staff and check the website address before entering account or payment details. HTTPS protects data in transit, but a fraudulent website can also use HTTPS. Keep your device updated and use two-factor authentication where available.

For most visitors, the useful combination is guest Wi-Fi, enough mobile data for time outdoors, and essential trip details saved offline. That gives you flexibility without relying on universal free coverage, a guaranteed speed or an unfamiliar network at the moment you need it most.
