We did not know much about Mui Ne before we decided to go there together with my brother and his girlfriend. So we were a bit surprised when we discovered that this place was one of the best and not least the most popular place to go kite surfing in South East Asia! The Mui Ne beach, not the beach we stayed at (White Sand Beach), was packed with kite schools and kite surfers, from beginners to pros.
It so happened I had my birthday while we were in Mui Ne. We did not have any plans for the day, except to go out to a nice restaurant for dinner in the evening for a little celebration.
The day started at the White Sand Beach, relaxing in the sunbeds when all of a sudden my brother came walking to the beach with a birthday cake! Iiiiihaaa, what a nice surprise! The cake was beautifully decorated with white and blue meringue flowers, and tasted delicious! 🙂
The surprises didn`t stop there, oh no! It turned out that Espen, Christer, and Mari had arranged for us to take a Kite Surfing course!!! Wooow!!! I have for a long time wanted to learn kite surfing, so I was so happy to finally try it out! It was my best birthday present ever!
We took the introduction kite surfing course (level 1 of the education of http://www.ikointl.com/) at Surfpoint Kite surfing School. Many of the kite surfing schools in Mui Ne were Russian and only took in Russian people. This was one of the few that spoke English and took in Kite Surfing students from all over the world.
We had a fantastic kite instructor, Adam, who explained everything we needed to know. After a short theory lesson at the beach (explaining the wind window and so on), we started out with a small training kite.
After this introduction course, we all were caught by the kite surfing bug. Espen and Christer went back to take the kite surfing one step further. They both did body dragging in the sea. It turned out, however, that the waves were really big this day, so it was difficult and not ideal for beginners.
I really enjoyed my birthday kitesurfing Mui Ne, it was perfect! Even though we only took the three hours introduction course, we were all caught by the kite surfing bug! The instructors Adam and Peter at the Surfpoint Kite Surfing School were great and very professional! We felt very safe.
Mui Ne is however not perfect for beginners, in my opinion. The waves are too big, and the beach is so crowded and full of kite surfers that people crash into each other once in a while. But the wind is constant.
Espen and I later went to Sri Lanka, where we took some more kite surfing lessons at Kalpitiya. Kalpitiya is perfect for beginners, with a shallow lagoon and no waves, and not that many other kite surfers.
PS! Thank you so much, Mari, for taking all the photos of us kiting!
Where To Stay In Mui Ne
White Sands Resort – We stayed at White Sands Resort and loved it! The bungalows are located right on the beach, and this resort has the best private beach in Mui Ne, with no other hotels using it. It is very relaxed and quiet. The resort is located a little out of Mui Ne town, but you can easily walk or take a taxi into town. Read our review of White Sands Resort HERE.
