History of Formation and Development

Lật Dương sedge mat weaving village, located in Quang Phục commune, Tiên Lãng district, Hải Phòng, is renowned for its traditional craft of weaving sedge mats and producing various products from sedge. The village’s history of formation and development spans over 400 years, originating in the 17th century (though some records suggest the 16th century).

The craft began as a means for local farmers to utilize the abundant sedge growing in the area. Over time, the villagers perfected their techniques, passing down their skills through generations. The mats produced here are known for their quality and durability, making them highly sought after in different regions.

In the lunar months of July and August, villagers harvest sedge from local fields and beyond, bringing it back to the village for processing. The production involves multiple steps: harvesting, drying, weaving, and dyeing. Lật Dương mats come in two types: plain, made from white sedge, and floral, which requires more intricate techniques and artistry.

Despite modern industrial developments and urbanization pressures, Lật Dương remains the only surviving sedge mat weaving village in Hải Phòng. This resilience is due in part to the village’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. In recognition of its historical and cultural value, Lật Dương was officially recognized as a traditional craft village in 1999.

The village continues to thrive, contributing unique, traditionally valuable products to the market, and offering a glimpse into Vietnam’s rich cultural tapestry.
