Most international trips to North Vietnam should begin at Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi because it has the broadest flight choice and the simplest onward network. Cat Bi International Airport (HPH) is the practical air gateway for Hai Phong and can work for Cat Ba or Ha Long when the flight fits. Van Don International Airport (VDO) can reduce road travel for eastern Quang Ninh, but only when a confirmed operating flight matches the itinerary.
Choose the airport from the first two destinations, not from the name of a single attraction. A closer airport with an inconvenient flight can be worse than HAN with a reliable connection. Check the operating terminal, baggage arrangement, arrival time and final ground transfer before booking separate tickets.
Quick airport decisions
- Hanoi: use Noi Bai (HAN).
- Ninh Binh: HAN is normally the most practical flight gateway, followed by road or rail.
- Sapa or Ha Giang: use HAN for the normal long-distance connection; do not plan around proposed airports or map labels.
- Hai Phong: use Cat Bi (HPH) when the route and schedule work.
- Cat Ba: compare HPH for proximity with HAN for flight choice and a longer ground connection.
- Ha Long: compare HAN, HPH and VDO by the actual flight, harbor and hotel location.
- Van Don, Ao Tien, Co To or eastern Quang Ninh: VDO can be useful when an operating flight is confirmed.
- Domestic connection at HAN: expect a terminal change when moving between an international flight and a domestic flight.
- Separate tickets: allow time for immigration, baggage collection, terminal transfer and a new check-in.
- Late arrival: protect the first night; do not combine it with the last bus, ferry or cruise check-in.
Know the three main gateways
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
HAN is the main gateway for Hanoi and the default airport for a wider North Vietnam route. It connects naturally with Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Ba Be and the bays through onward road or rail travel.
Terminal 1 serves domestic flights and Terminal 2 serves international flights. They are separate buildings connected by an airport shuttle. Check the flight number and terminal on the airline’s current information rather than relying on an old screenshot or a driver’s message.
HAN is outside central Hanoi. Road time changes with traffic, weather and the final neighborhood. A hotel in the Old Quarter, West Lake and the far side of the city will not have the same arrival time.
Cat Bi International Airport (HPH)
HPH serves Hai Phong and is the best flight gateway when the trip begins in the city. It can also support Cat Ba or Ha Long plans, but an airport arrival is only the first stage. Cat Ba still requires an island connection, and Ha Long requires a separate road transfer.
The available flight network is smaller than at HAN and can change. Compare the total trip, including connection risk and ground transport, rather than booking HPH solely because it is geographically closer.
Use the terminal and passenger information shown by the airline and airport for the travel date. Airport construction or operating changes can affect vehicle approach, check-in areas and walking routes.
Van Don International Airport (VDO)
VDO is in Quang Ninh and can be useful for Van Don, Ao Tien, Co To connections and some eastern bay itineraries. It may also appear attractive for Ha Long, but the usable advantage depends on the specific flight, arrival time, harbor and hotel.
Do not assume a route operates daily or year-round. Verify the flight directly with the airline for the intended date, then confirm onward transport before buying. A limited schedule reduces flexibility if a flight changes.
Airports that do not solve every northern route
Sapa, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Ba Be and Ninh Binh do not have a normal city airport that removes the long ground journey for most international travelers. Use a confirmed commercial airport and plan the onward train, bus or car as part of the itinerary.
Dien Bien Phu Airport serves the far northwest. It is useful for a Dien Bien itinerary, not as a shortcut to Sapa, Ha Giang or the northeast. Tho Xuan Airport serves Thanh Hoa and belongs to a different route logic from the central northern circuit.
Do not book around an airport project, future route announcement or search-engine map label. The usable test is simple: a licensed airline is selling the correct flight on your date and the onward connection is workable.
Choose the airport by destination
Hanoi and a classic first trip
HAN is the clear choice for Hanoi. It also gives the widest set of onward options for a route combining Hanoi with Ninh Binh, Sapa, Ha Giang or a bay. If an international itinerary arrives at HAN and later flies domestically, check whether the connection changes terminals.
Ninh Binh
HAN usually offers the simplest international access. Continue by road, or move into Hanoi or to the railway route if that fits the schedule. Do not pair an evening arrival with an optimistic same-night connection unless the operator has confirmed it.
If Ninh Binh is the first stop, compare a direct road transfer with a hotel night near Hanoi. The safer choice depends on arrival time, group size, fatigue and the cancellation cost of the first activity.
Sapa
Use HAN and continue by road, or reach Lao Cai by train and transfer uphill. A proposed Sapa airport is not a usable travel plan until a real commercial flight is bookable. A late international arrival rarely combines well with a rushed same-night mountain departure.
For rail cabin choices and the Lao Cai transfer, use the North Vietnam train guide.
Ha Giang, Cao Bang and Ba Be
HAN is the normal air gateway, followed by a long road journey. Give the first mountain leg its own realistic day or overnight connection. Starting a demanding road route immediately after a long-haul flight increases fatigue and removes recovery time if the flight is delayed.
Hai Phong
HPH is the direct choice when an operating flight reaches Hai Phong at a useful time. HAN can still be better when it avoids a difficult air connection or offers a much more reliable arrival. Compare door-to-door time rather than flight time alone.
Cat Ba
HPH is the nearest practical air gateway for many Cat Ba trips, but it does not put you on the island. The route still needs road transport and a bridge, ferry, cable car or boat arrangement depending on the current connection.
HAN works when international flight choice matters more than ground distance. Protect the final island transfer on a late arrival, especially in bad weather.
Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay
HAN, HPH and VDO can all appear in a bay itinerary. The correct airport depends on the exact embarkation point. Ha Long City, Tuan Chau, a Hai Phong marina, Cat Ba and an eastern Quang Ninh port are not interchangeable.
Obtain the vessel name, harbor, check-in time and transfer arrangement before booking the flight. Do not use the general phrase Ha Long cruise as the ground-transfer address.
Bai Tu Long, Van Don and Co To
VDO can reduce road travel when the flight and eastern Quang Ninh plan align. HAN or HPH may provide more flight choices but require a longer transfer. For an island ferry, protect the sailing rather than assuming the last departure will wait for a delayed aircraft.
Understand HAN terminal transfers
An international-to-international connection that remains airside may follow the transfer route inside Terminal 2 when the airline and baggage arrangement allow it. Follow the airline and airport signs for the specific connection.
An international-to-domestic connection generally requires immigration, baggage collection when applicable, customs, travel from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, new check-in or bag drop, and domestic security. A domestic-to-international connection reverses that terminal move and adds international document checks.
Noi Bai provides a free shuttle between the terminals. Use the current airport signs for the pickup point and operating hours, because stops and service arrangements can change. Do not plan a tight connection from an old timetable.
One ticket and separate tickets are different
Protected connection on one booking
When flights are issued on one protected booking, the airline can normally explain baggage transfer and rebooking responsibility. Still check whether you must collect bags, pass immigration or change terminals. A shared booking reference does not remove entry procedures.
Self-transfer on separate tickets
With separate tickets, assume responsibility for immigration eligibility, baggage collection, customs, terminal transfer, check-in deadlines and disruption. If the first flight arrives late, the second airline may treat the missed flight as a no-show.
Use a longer buffer than the theoretical walking and shuttle time. An overnight hotel is often cheaper than losing a domestic ticket and the first prepaid night of a tour.
Plan the first hour after landing
- Follow the correct arrival or transfer route before leaving the controlled area.
- Complete immigration and entry procedures when required.
- Collect baggage and check it for damage before leaving the claim area. Get help with missing baggage at Noi Bai.
- Use customs channels according to the goods carried.
- Connect to trusted internet or activate an eSIM.
- Withdraw or exchange only enough money for immediate needs after checking the rate and fee.
- Match the driver, vehicle and pickup point to the confirmed booking.
- Send a short arrival update through a trusted connection.
The North Vietnam SIM and eSIM guide explains activation, dual-SIM setup and coverage limits. The North Vietnam money guide covers ATMs, cards, cash and conversion checks.
Meet a driver safely
Obtain the driver’s name or contact, vehicle plate, pickup zone and a working number before arrival when possible. Match those details before entering the vehicle. A person holding a familiar logo or passenger name is not enough if the vehicle information differs.
At taxi ranks, use the organized line or a properly identified provider. In a ride-hailing app, check the plate, vehicle and driver shown in the app. Do not accept an unsolicited substitute who says the booked driver is busy.
Confirm the destination with the full hotel name, address and map pin. Similar hotel names exist, and some streets are repeated in different districts. Keep luggage with you until the vehicle and driver match.
Public bus, taxi, ride-hailing or private car?
Public bus
A public airport bus can be economical when you arrive during operating hours, carry manageable luggage and understand the final walk or ride. Confirm the current route and stop on the operator or airport information, because old articles may show retired services.
Taxi
A taxi is practical for a direct city trip. Use the official rank, confirm the meter or agreed fare policy, and keep the destination visible on your phone. Tolls and airport fees should be clarified before departure.
Ride-hailing
Ride-hailing gives an in-app record, but pickup zones and access rules can differ by terminal. Match the plate and driver. Do not move to an unofficial area only because a caller says the normal pickup is closed.
Pre-booked private car
A pre-booked car is useful for families, substantial luggage, late arrival or a direct intercity trip. The booking should state the airport and terminal, destination, passengers, luggage, waiting policy, included fees and emergency contact.
The North Vietnam transport guide compares the broader train, bus, car and route choices after the airport.
Protect late arrivals and early departures
After a late arrival, use a hotel with a confirmed staffed or arranged check-in. Do not assume a homestay or apartment will admit guests at any hour. Send the flight number and expected arrival, then keep the access instructions offline.
For an early departure, work backward from the airline’s check-in guidance, terminal, road conditions and possible queues. Confirm whether the hotel can prepare breakfast or a packed meal. An airport-area hotel helps only if its shuttle or car actually operates at the required time.
Travel with children, reduced mobility or medical equipment
Request airline and airport assistance before travel through the proper booking channel. Confirm the meeting point, mobility-device dimensions, battery details and whether assistance continues through a terminal change.
For children, prearrange the correct restraint where available and verify it in writing. Do not assume every taxi or transfer carries a child seat. Keep essential food, medication and one change of clothes in cabin baggage within airline limits.
Travelers carrying refrigerated medicine, oxygen equipment, needles or battery-powered devices should obtain airline instructions before departure. The North Vietnam health and emergency guide provides a preparation checklist.
Weather and disruption
Fog, heavy rain, thunderstorms and tropical systems can affect flights and onward roads. A landing airport may remain open while a ferry, mountain road or cruise operation changes. Treat the whole connection as one chain.
Monitor the airline, airport, accommodation and onward operator separately. If a flight changes, update the driver and property through verified contacts. The North Vietnam weather guide explains regional rain, heat, winter cold and coastal storm risk.
Avoid common airport mistakes
- Do not confuse HAN with an airport inside central Hanoi.
- Do not assume international and domestic flights use the same HAN terminal.
- Do not buy separate tickets with a connection based only on scheduled landing and takeoff times.
- Do not choose HPH or VDO without confirming an operating flight for the exact date.
- Do not treat HPH as if it were on Cat Ba Island.
- Do not book a bay transfer without the precise harbor and vessel information.
- Do not rely on a future airport project for Sapa or another mountain destination.
- Do not enter a vehicle whose plate or driver does not match the booking.
- Do not place essential medicine only in checked baggage.
- Do not connect a late flight directly to the last ferry or a fixed cruise check-in.
Start with the North Vietnam itinerary guide, select the airport that supports the first two stops, then reserve the flight and ground connection as one plan. The most useful airport is the one that leaves a realistic route after the aircraft lands.
