For a taxi in Ho Chi Minh City, use GrabCar or Green SM if you want to enter your destination and see a fare in an app. If you prefer to call a dispatcher or have your hotel arrange a taxi, Vinasun, Mai Linh and VinaTaxi provide direct booking channels.
Uber no longer operates rides in Vietnam; its local service ended in 2018. For any current service, the important checks are the exact pickup point, vehicle identity, luggage space and how the fare is calculated. At Tan Son Nhat Airport, select your actual terminal before requesting a car.
Choose a booking method
- You have mobile data and want to compare prices: enter the same pickup, destination and vehicle size in Grab and Green SM before choosing.
- You want help arranging a car: ask your hotel to call Vinasun, Mai Linh or VinaTaxi and confirm the expected arrival.
- You have just landed: choose either the signed taxi queue or your app’s designated pickup area. They may be in different places.
- You need a vehicle for several hours: request a separate charter quote covering stops and waiting time instead of assuming an ordinary city ride includes them.
Taxi companies and apps
GrabCar: app booking with a displayed fare
GrabCar lets you enter both addresses, choose an available car category and see the quoted fare before requesting a driver. Prices respond to demand, so a previous ride or an old fare chart is not a reliable quote for your next trip.
Check the service label. GrabCar and GrabTaxi are different: GrabCar shows an upfront trip fare, while GrabTaxi uses the taxi meter and the app’s displayed amount is an estimate. Airport access charges, tolls or other applicable extras can affect the total; review the fare breakdown.
Choose a car service when traveling with suitcases or companions. GrabBike is a motorbike service and is not a substitute for a car with luggage space.
Green SM: electric cars, formerly Xanh SM
Green SM is the current name of Xanh SM. You may still encounter the older name in directions or conversations. Use the Green SM app to select a vehicle and inspect the fare, or call 1555 for assistance with a booking.
At participating airport pickup points, GreenNow can connect an available waiting vehicle to your app booking using a trip code. This is a specific in-app process: confirm that the matched vehicle and journey appear in your account before leaving. If you already have an assigned driver, use that booking rather than starting a second trip with another car.
Vinasun: direct booking or the Vinasun app
Vinasun’s Ho Chi Minh City booking number is 028 38 27 27 27. You can also use the Vinasun app. Give the dispatcher the street number, hotel or building name, destination and vehicle requirements.
Vinasun offers several vehicle categories, so request the size you need and confirm the fare method for that booking. When the car arrives, check the company name and vehicle identification against the booking details. Vinasun and VinaTaxi are separate companies with different telephone numbers.
Mai Linh: phone dispatch through 1055
Call 1055 to request a Mai Linh taxi, or ask your hotel to make the call. The Mai Linh app provides another booking option. If a short code does not connect from your phone, use the app or ask reception to assist.
Specify that you are in Ho Chi Minh City and give the complete pickup address. Explain the number of passengers and bags rather than asking only for a “big taxi.” Confirm the payment method before the car is dispatched if you need to use a card.
VinaTaxi: a separate company with its own dispatcher
VinaTaxi’s booking number is 028 38 111 111. The company offers city taxis in different sizes and separately arranged intercity services.
Use the dispatcher to confirm the vehicle and expected pickup. For an excursion outside the central city, ask for the complete route price, whether it is one-way or return, and how waiting is charged. An advertised per-kilometer figure is not enough to price a day with several stops.
Understand the total fare
There is no single taxi price covering every trip between Tan Son Nhat Airport and “the center.” Your terminal, hotel address, vehicle category, booking method and travel conditions matter. Use the actual address in the app, or give it to the dispatcher, before comparing options.
- Metered taxi: check that the meter starts for your ride and ask how airport charges, tolls and waiting will be added.
- App-priced ride: inspect the amount and breakdown before confirming, then check the completed trip receipt for extras.
- Prearranged transfer or charter: get a total quote including the route, waiting allowance, parking, tolls and any airport access charges.
Compare like with like. A smaller vehicle, promotional discount or different pickup point can explain a lower app price. Additional stops, a changed destination or a long wait may change the amount, so update the booking or agree the terms before changing the journey.
Select the intended payment method before requesting an app ride. If the trip is charged to your card in the app, check the receipt before paying a separate cash request for the same fare. For a cash ride, read the denomination on each note and count your change; keeping smaller notes makes payment easier.
Getting a car at Tan Son Nhat Airport
Identify the terminal first
Tan Son Nhat has domestic terminals T1 and T3, plus international terminal T2. Check the terminal on your flight information and the signs where you arrive. Do not choose a pickup point merely labeled “Tan Son Nhat” if the app offers terminal-specific options.
Collect your bags and find the route to your selected pickup area before requesting an immediate ride. If you are still waiting for immigration or baggage, a driver may arrive before you can reach the car.
Use the pickup area for your actual service
For a conventional taxi, follow the taxi signs and use the dispatcher or staff at the designated queue. Ask for the fare method before boarding. For an app ride, follow the pickup instructions attached to your booking and send the driver your terminal and marked meeting point.
At T3, GrabCar pickup is on the ground floor of the PNA parking building, which may be labeled Floor 1. It is different from the departure drop-off area on Floor 3. Follow the Grab directions toward PNA and check the meeting point in the app instead of waiting at the first arrivals curb you see.
Green SM’s waiting-taxi and GreenNow arrangements can use different lanes from an app-dispatched vehicle. Confirm which service you selected with the marked staff or through the app. The same company name does not mean every car collects passengers at the same curb.
Airport access fees can depend on the terminal and direction of travel. Do not assume a fee paid on the way to the airport also applies to the return journey. Ask for the charge to be identified in the booking or receipt if it is added separately.
Allow for the whole journey to your hotel
The driver’s arrival estimate is not your total airport-to-hotel time. You also need time for arrival formalities, walking to the pickup point and loading bags, followed by the drive. Check the current road estimate for your hotel; traffic or heavy rain can extend it.
For a departure, work backward from your airline’s recommended airport arrival time, add the drive and a margin for delays, then choose the pickup time. Grab offers advance booking, but review the reservation, driver status, waiting rules and cancellation terms rather than treating a scheduled request as permission to leave no spare time.
Make the pickup straightforward
Use a reachable hotel entrance or a clearly marked roadside pickup point. A map pin inside an alley, shopping center or pedestrian area may not identify a place where the driver can stop. Include the building name and the correct branch when several hotels or restaurants share a name.
Keep the Vietnamese address on your phone. You can show: “Cho tôi đến địa chỉ này. Giá đã bao gồm phí sân bay và cầu đường chưa?” This means, “Please take me to this address. Does the price include airport fees and tolls?”
Before boarding an app car, match its license plate and driver details to the booking. Keep the journey in the app if that is how you booked it. For a dispatched taxi, note the vehicle number or registration and request a receipt so the company can identify the trip if you leave something behind.
Choose enough space for passengers and bags
A vehicle’s seat category does not guarantee space for the same number of large suitcases. Tell the operator how many people are traveling, how many bags you have and whether you are carrying a stroller or mobility aid. Ask for the actual vehicle arrangement before confirming a family airport transfer.
If you need a child seat or wheelchair-accessible transport, arrange it explicitly in advance; an ordinary taxi request does not establish that equipment is available. For several hours of sightseeing, also confirm whether the driver waits between stops and how overtime is charged. For a simple hotel-to-restaurant trip, a normal point-to-point booking is usually the more appropriate arrangement.
