Traveling from Hai Phong to Quan Lan normally involves three legs: a road journey to Ao Tien passenger port in Van Don, a booked boat to the island, and a transfer from the landing pier to your accommodation. Arrange the boat and island pickup before fixing your departure from Hai Phong.
Quan Lan and Minh Chau are different areas on the same island, with different boat arrivals and hotel locations. Ask your accommodation which pier suits it, then make sure that name appears on your boat booking. Choosing the wrong landing can add an unnecessary journey across the island.
First, choose where to stay on the island
Quan Lan lies in the Bai Tu Long Bay area of Quang Ninh. Its beaches, village streets and religious buildings suit a stay that combines time by the sea with short island outings.

1. Hai Phong to Ao Tien passenger port
Ao Tien is the main passenger-port option to check for boats to Quan Lan and Minh Chau. Do not travel automatically to Cai Rong because an older guide names it; use the exact mainland departure shown on your confirmed boat ticket.
A private transfer from Hai Phong to Ao Tien port can take you from your Hai Phong pickup address to the passenger-port area. This covers the mainland road leg. Boat tickets and transport on Quan Lan need their own arrangements.
Give the driver your boat’s check-in deadline and the correct port pin. Allow for road delays, unloading, finding the ticket desk and walking to the boarding area. A driving estimate alone is not a suitable boat-connection plan.
If comparing a coach or shared vehicle, confirm its actual drop-off. A ticket to Van Don, Cam Pha or Halong does not automatically include delivery to Ao Tien. Add any final taxi journey and waiting time before deciding whether it fits your sailing.
If you drive yourself, arrange mainland parking for the length of your stay. Do not assume a passenger boat carries cars or motorbikes. A motorcycle trip also requires an appropriate road route rather than a car-only expressway route.
2. Boat to the correct Quan Lan or Minh Chau pier
Choose the sailing after checking your hotel’s preferred arrival. Boat schedules, vessel types and fares vary by operator and date, so book the outward and return journeys together rather than relying on a fixed timetable from an old guide.
- Mainland departure: exact port, check-in location and boarding deadline.
- Island landing: Quan Lan or Minh Chau, with the pier name or pin shared with your hotel.
- Full fare: passenger ticket, any separate port charge, child criteria and luggage allowance.
- Special transport: explicit acceptance of any bicycle or motorbike you intend to bring.
- Changes and cancellations: how you will be notified and what happens if the sailing cannot operate.
Keep the operator’s contact and your booking details available offline. Crossing time is only part of the journey; check-in, waiting and the onward hotel transfer also affect when you arrive.
3. Island pier to your hotel
Arrange a hotel pickup, electric buggy or other suitable island transport at the pier your boat actually uses. Agree on the destination, fare, passenger capacity and luggage space before departure.
Do not rely on a vehicle being available immediately when the boat docks, especially for a group. Keep everyone within the vehicle’s permitted capacity and book another vehicle if needed.
Beaches and places to visit
Minh Chau, Quan Lan and Son Hao beaches
Minh Chau is a beach and accommodation area toward the northern part of the island. Quan Lan Beach is closer to its namesake settlement, while Son Hao is another beach option along the island road between the two areas.
Choose your beach outings around where you stay and the conditions on the day, rather than expecting the same water clarity, waves or crowds at every beach. Use designated swimming areas and follow current beach signs and staff instructions.
Confirm access to any hotel’s seating, pool or other paid facilities separately. Arrange camping or group activities with the accommodation or beach manager, and do not light fires without permission.
Quan Lan communal house and nearby religious sites
The Quan Lan communal house, or dinh, is a place of village worship and community tradition. Its carved timber and dragon motifs offer a different outing from the beaches. The nearby Buddhist pagoda and shrines have their own religious roles; they are not simply different names for the same building.
The island’s Tran Khanh Du shrine honors the commander associated with the Van Don victory over an invading supply fleet in 1288. Dress respectfully, keep voices low and leave space for people who are there to worship.
Eo Gio Got Beo viewpoint
Eo Gio Got Beo is a rocky viewpoint at the southern end of the island, with a walking approach beyond the road journey. Ask your accommodation about current authorized access and the condition of the path before setting out.
Wear shoes with grip and avoid exposed edges, strong winds and slippery conditions. Leave time to return in daylight rather than treating the viewpoint as a quick stop before your boat.
Weather and the return journey
Check the marine forecast and the operator’s sailing status shortly before both crossings. Disruption is not limited to one named month, and an outward trip going ahead does not guarantee the return boat will run.
Keep some flexibility in the nights around your island stay. Missing the last outward sailing may mean sleeping on the mainland; weather disruption can mean an extra night on the island. Avoid placing a flight or another inflexible departure immediately after the planned return crossing.
