Tuan Chau or Ha Long International Port: Which One Is Your Actual Cruise Boarding Point?

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

Your actual boarding point is the port named in your final cruise voucher. Do not choose a terminal because it sounds more “international”: both Tuan Chau International Passenger Port and Ha Long International Cruise Port serve local sightseeing and overnight cruises. Ha Long International Cruise Port also has a separate quay for large seagoing cruise ships.

The two ports are separate locations, roughly 13–14 km apart by road. A clear run may take about 20 minutes, but check-in traffic can make the journey longer. Before leaving Hanoi, Hai Phong, Ninh Binh or a Ha Long hotel, match the port name, cruise name, lounge or counter and required check-in time against the latest message from your operator.

Quick answer: read the port line on your voucher

  • “Tuan Chau International Passenger Port,” “Tuan Chau Marina” or “Tuan Chau Harbor”: go to the passenger port on Tuan Chau Island.
  • “Ha Long International Cruise Port” in Bai Chay: go to the terminal near the Bai Chay and Sun World area, not Tuan Chau.
  • Only “Halong port” or “international port”: the instruction is not specific enough. Ask the cruise operator to provide the full port name and a map pin.
  • “Hanoi (Halong Bay)” on an ocean-cruise itinerary: this is a destination label, not a confirmed berth. Follow the cruise line’s port notice for your sailing date.

The newest written boarding instruction for your exact departure should control the journey. If an older booking page, a transfer message and the final voucher show different ports, ask the cruise operator to resolve the conflict in writing before travel.

Why the word “International” causes confusion

In this context, “international” is part of a port’s official or commonly used name. It does not describe every boat that departs there. A foreign visitor taking a one-day or overnight Ha Long Bay cruise is still joining a local tourist vessel, even if the voucher names an international passenger port.

Ha Long International Cruise Port has two distinct functions. Its domestic berths serve local sightseeing boats, overnight vessels, speedboats and yachts. Its international quay receives large seagoing cruise ships calling at Ha Long as part of a wider voyage. Passengers using the domestic area and passengers arriving on an ocean liner may therefore mention the same port name while following very different boarding procedures.

Tuan Chau International Passenger Port is a major base for local bay cruises and also connects with the Tuan Chau–Cat Ba ferry service. It should not be treated as another name for the Bai Chay terminal.

Tuan Chau International Passenger Port

Tuan Chau port is on Tuan Chau Island, west of central Bai Chay. Depending on the cruise company, your instructions may use “Tuan Chau International Passenger Port,” “Tuan Chau International Marina,” “Tuan Chau Marina” or “Tuan Chau Harbor.” These variations usually point to the same wider port complex, but the exact lounge, terminal or pier still matters.

Many day boats and overnight cruises use Tuan Chau, including vessels traveling through Ha Long Bay or continuing toward Lan Ha Bay. You may check in at an operator’s private lounge before walking to the pier or taking a tender or speedboat to the main vessel. The name of the bay does not identify the boarding port by itself.

What to confirm for Tuan Chau

  • The cruise company and vessel name;
  • The terminal, lounge name or lot number;
  • The passenger’s required arrival time, not only the boat’s sailing time;
  • Whether luggage is accepted at the lounge or taken directly to the pier;
  • Whether boarding is directly onto the cruise or by tender or speedboat.

A driver reaching the entrance to Tuan Chau port has not necessarily reached your check-in point. Keep the lounge details and the cruise contact number available offline so the final section of the drop-off can be coordinated.

Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay

Ha Long International Cruise Port is in Bai Chay, close to the Sun World area. It is a different port from Tuan Chau. Some cruise documents may emphasize the terminal building or the cruise company’s lounge rather than the domestic berth, so use the full address or map pin supplied by the operator.

Local day cruises and overnight cruises can depart from the domestic side of this port. Large ocean-going ships use the controlled international quay. If you are starting a local Ha Long Bay cruise, follow the local operator’s check-in instructions; do not go toward the ocean ship’s gangway or assume that port security will redirect you to the correct lounge.

What to confirm for Ha Long International Cruise Port

  • Whether the instruction is for the domestic cruise terminal or an international ship call;
  • The floor, lounge, counter or authorized meeting point;
  • The check-in window and the latest accepted arrival time;
  • Whether the local cruise is alongside the pier or reached by a transfer boat;
  • The contact to call if the driver cannot enter the expected drop-off area.

What does not tell you the correct port

Day cruise versus overnight cruise

This distinction is not enough. Both ports can serve day trips and overnight vessels. Use the operator’s final boarding document rather than a general rule about trip length.

Ha Long Bay versus Lan Ha Bay

The cruising area is also not a reliable shortcut. A vessel may start from Tuan Chau and continue toward Lan Ha Bay, while another may use Ha Long International Cruise Port for a Ha Long Bay route. Some Lan Ha Bay cruises start on Cat Ba Island instead, so never infer the pier from the bay name alone.

The cruise brand or a previous passenger’s trip

A company may operate several vessels or change its check-in arrangement. An old review, map pin or itinerary from another sailing can send you to the wrong place. Confirm the vessel and departure date as well as the brand.

A transfer ticket that says only “Halong”

Ha Long is a destination, not one exact cruise drop-off. Shared vehicles may use fixed stops, and a private car still needs the precise port or lounge. Send the transport provider a screenshot of the final cruise voucher before the pickup date.

Five details your cruise voucher should contain

  1. Full port name: Tuan Chau International Passenger Port or Ha Long International Cruise Port.
  2. Check-in point: terminal, lounge, counter, floor, lot or pier.
  3. Cruise identity: company, vessel and itinerary duration.
  4. Timing: required arrival or check-in window and departure time.
  5. Day-of-travel contact: a working phone or messaging number for the cruise team.

If one of these details is missing, request it before arranging an independent transfer. Save the voucher, map pin and contact number as screenshots because mobile data may be unreliable during the journey or inside a busy terminal.

Book the cruise and transfer for the same port

If you have not selected a vessel, compare the current Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay cruises first. The cruise choice must come before the final port transfer because the operator and sailing determine the check-in location.

For an independent journey, Hai Phong Tours currently offers direct routes from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, Hai Phong to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh to Ha Long Bay. These services list both Tuan Chau and Ha Long International Cruise Port among their drop-off options. Enter the exact port, lounge and check-in time in the request instead of writing only “Halong cruise.”

Before confirming any separate vehicle, check whether transport is already included in the cruise package. If it is, verify its pickup area and which port it serves. For the return journey, use the cruise’s confirmed disembarkation port and time rather than assuming they are identical to the outbound plan.

If you arrive at the wrong port

  1. Contact the cruise operator immediately and state your current location.
  2. Ask whether boarding is still possible and which check-in point remains open.
  3. Travel between the ports by road; do not try to solve the mistake by walking through port areas or finding an unofficial boat.
  4. Send the corrected map pin to the driver and keep the operator updated with your estimated arrival.

The drive between the two ports may be short on a map, but a cruise cannot always delay departure. An operator may suggest a later tender or speedboat in some circumstances, but this is not guaranteed and may involve an extra charge. Do not book that option through an unverified person at the port.

Special note for international cruise-ship passengers

If you are already traveling on a large ocean cruise ship, you are not checking in for an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise in the usual way. Follow the cruise line’s berth, gangway, shuttle and all-aboard instructions for that ship. The itinerary label “Hanoi (Halong Bay)” is not enough to establish the terminal.

A local bay excursion during the port call is a separate service. Its guide may meet you at the international terminal and use a domestic boat there, or road transport may take you to another departure point such as Tuan Chau. Confirm both the ocean ship meeting point and the local boat pier; they are not automatically the same.

Frequently asked questions

Are Tuan Chau Port and Ha Long International Cruise Port the same place?

No. Tuan Chau is on Tuan Chau Island, while Ha Long International Cruise Port is in Bai Chay. They are roughly 13–14 km apart by road.

Does every overnight cruise leave from Tuan Chau?

No. Overnight vessels use both Tuan Chau and Ha Long International Cruise Port. The correct port depends on the cruise company, vessel and sailing.

Does “Ha Long International Cruise Port” mean I am boarding an ocean liner?

Not necessarily. The same port complex has domestic berths for local bay cruises and an international quay for large seagoing ships.

Can a driver use the cruise name to choose the port?

The cruise name helps, but it should not replace the final voucher. Provide the full port name, map pin, lounge and check-in time because companies can operate more than one vessel or meeting point.

What if two messages name different ports?

Do not choose between them yourself. Send both messages to the cruise operator and ask for one final written instruction for your vessel and departure date. Then update the transfer provider.

Use one final boarding instruction

The safest sequence is simple: confirm the cruise, receive the final voucher, identify the exact port and lounge, then book the transfer to that location. Treat “Tuan Chau,” “Ha Long International Cruise Port” and an international ocean-ship berth as distinct instructions. One screenshot shared with every traveler and the driver can prevent a missed cruise.
