For a souvenir that can stay in your luggage throughout a longer trip, start with a small craft item or carefully chosen pearl jewelry. For a food gift, Halong’s squid cakes and dried seafood are distinctive options, but choose them only when the storage instructions and your onward journey fit.
Where you shop matters less than what the seller can tell you about the actual item. Check the producer, ingredients or materials, price basis and receipt. Buying in a famous market does not by itself establish local origin, food safety or jewelry quality.
Choose a gift that fits your journey
- Several more days of sightseeing: a small non-food keepsake avoids the need to manage chilled food.
- A short journey with reliable cold storage: packaged cha muc, or squid cakes, can be worth considering.
- A gift for someone who cooks: dried squid or dried sa sung can be useful, provided the recipient knows how to prepare and store it.
- A more substantial personal gift: compare pearl jewelry by its actual specifications and after-sales terms.
Squid cakes: buy with a plan to keep them cold
Halong cha muc is made from pounded squid or cuttlefish with seasoning, shaped into patties and fried. It is often eaten with sticky rice or rice rolls. Different producers offer different grades and recipes, so compare the same pack weight and ask what is included.
Confirm whether the product is ready to eat or needs further cooking, its use-by date and its refrigeration instructions. Vacuum packing does not replace refrigeration for perishable food. If you cannot keep the product cold during transfers, hotel changes and the flight home, enjoy squid cakes during your stay instead.
Dried squid and sa sung: ingredients rather than automatic travel snacks
Dried squid is sold in different sizes and grades. Compare the net weight, whether the price is per pack or kilogram, the product origin and the preparation instructions. Whole dried squid, seasoned ready-to-eat squid and partly dried muc mot nang are different products with different storage needs.
Sa sung are edible marine worms associated with Quang Ninh, including the Van Don area. The dried product is used as a cooking ingredient, including for broth. It is a more specialized gift than a snack: ask about origin, cleaning, preparation and storage, and buy a quantity the recipient can use.
Choose labeled, intact packs. Color, smell or a taste sample cannot establish that a food is safe, and the word “dried” does not tell you the permitted storage temperature. Follow the instructions for the exact product.
Pearls and small craft gifts
Pearl jewelry is connected with Quang Ninh’s pearl-culturing industry. Cultured pearls are real pearls formed with human intervention; they are different from imitation beads. Ask what type of pearl you are buying, its size, any treatments, the metal used in the setting and the return or repair policy.
HaLong Pearl, operated by Cong ty Co phan Ngoc Trai Ha Long, is one local producer to consider when comparing jewelry. Confirm the current showroom before traveling. For a significant purchase, request written item details and consider an independent gemological report; a souvenir-market label alone is not an appraisal.
For a smaller purchase, look for ceramics, embroidered items or a compact decorative piece. Coal carving is a craft associated with Quang Ninh’s mining heritage, but check the maker, material, finish and weight before buying. Ask for protective packaging for anything fragile, and do not assume every item sold in Halong was made locally.
Where to shop
Halong Market 1 and Hien Nhung
Halong Market 1 is on the Hon Gai side of the city and offers seafood, dried specialties and everyday goods. For a specific squid-cake seller, Hien Nhung is at kiosks 228–230 inside the market.
Use the full seller name and kiosk numbers rather than assuming neighboring stalls belong to the same business. Confirm stock and packing arrangements if you are making a special visit.
Cai Dam Market in Bai Chay
Cai Dam Market is an option for travelers staying on the Bai Chay side. Alongside fresh seafood, stalls sell products such as squid cakes, dried squid and seafood floss.
Compare the same weight and product grade before agreeing on a price. Ask whether packing costs extra and whether the chosen product needs a chilled container. A low headline price is not enough to compare unlike grades or pack sizes.
Hai San Ong Ba in the Sun World old-quarter area
Hai San Ong Ba is at Lot C122, Sun World old-quarter area, Halong Road. Its range includes dried squid, dried fish and squid cakes, making it a focused shop to consider in Bai Chay.
Check the exact product’s availability before going, as the range and stock vary. Lot C122 identifies this seafood shop; it is not the address of the entire souvenir-shopping area.
Other specialties and packing before departure
Hoanh Bo rice wine and Quang Yen pork specialties also appear in regional gift lists. For wine, choose a sealed, labeled bottle and check your airline and destination’s rules before buying. For pork specialties, distinguish fermented nem chua from nem chao, a dish of sliced pork skin and roasted rice powder; ingredients and storage instructions differ.
Keep food in its original labeled packaging and check the destination’s official entry requirements for seafood, meat and alcohol. Airline acceptance and permission to import food are separate questions. Protect fragile gifts, retain receipts and allow enough shopping time before your confirmed cruise, transfer or flight departure.
