Chieu Lau Thi Mountain: Summit Steps, Road Access and Local Stays

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

Chieu Lau Thi is a mountain outing in the Ho Thau area of western Ha Giang, now Tuyen Quang province, with a summit roughly 2,400 meters above sea level. For a first visit, stay locally, arrange the mountain approach with your host and reserve a morning for the final climb. From Hanoi, a three-day trip gives you a more workable plan than trying to reach the summit between two long drives.

The crucial distinction is between a vehicle-assisted visit followed by steep steps and a longer walking route that starts lower down. Ask for the exact vehicle drop-off and walking distance before booking. A description of the final ascent alone does not tell you the length or difficulty of your whole outing.

Where Chieu Lau Thi fits into a northern trip

Use Chiêu Lầu Thi, Hồ Thầu, Tuyên Quang with your driver or accommodation. Older listings place it in Hoang Su Phi district, Ha Giang. It is in the western mountain region, separate from the Dong Van and Meo Vac circuit commonly called the Ha Giang Loop.

Ho Thau makes sense as a base when the summit is your priority. A room in central Ha Giang, Thong Nguyen or Ban Phung still leaves a separate mountain-road journey. Choose accommodation by its actual approach to your outing, rather than by the broad “Ha Giang” label.

The Hoang Su Phi travel guide compares the wider rice-terrace areas and arrival routes. Use it to decide whether to concentrate on Ho Thau or add another overnight base; the summit is not a roadside stop between every terrace village.

The climb: short on a map can still mean steep

The upper approach leads into slopes and stone steps through the mountain vegetation. Expect hundreds of steps rather than a level viewpoint path. The descent matters as much as the climb, especially when the stone is wet or you are tired.

Choose the vehicle-assisted option if your goal is the summit view and you are comfortable with repeated stairs. If you want a longer forest hike, agree its starting point, ascent, return route and guide separately. A trail-running route or an app’s recorded track may begin far below the tourist drop-off.

For a local overnight stay, keep the morning free for the transfer, ascent, time near the summit and descent. Let the host estimate the walking from the actual drop-off for your pace. Do not attach a tight departure to a short advertised climbing time.

Travelers who cannot manage a sustained stair climb should choose village scenery and a lower view instead. Road access near the climbing area does not create a step-free route to the top. Families should decide around the children’s walking ability and comfort in cold, windy conditions, not just their age.

Arrange the last road section before choosing transport

Mountain roads here include narrow bends and steep sections. Vehicles can reach the vicinity of the climbing area, but the usable approach depends on road conditions and the vehicle. Rain can leave slippery or muddy sections even after the weather clears.

If you do not ride a motorbike, say so at the first inquiry. Ask whether your entire approach can be made in a suitable car on your date, or whether the proposal includes a motorbike transfer. Obtain an alternative before booking if you are unwilling to be a passenger; do not discover the change at a roadside meeting point.

Have the driver and host agree on the turnaround or waiting point and what happens if the car cannot reach it. An earlier drop-off adds walking, which changes both the schedule and the physical demand. A longer walk should be a deliberate choice, not an improvised solution after dark.

For the journey from Hanoi, keep the first day mainly for travel and arrival. If using a bus toward Ha Giang, arrange the onward transfer with your Ho Thau host before buying: the correct bus stop depends on the route being used. A ticket to the city does not deliver you to a mountain homestay.

Sunrise or a daylight visit

A sunrise attempt is easiest to organize after a local night, with the guide, transport and breakfast settled the evening before. Work backward from the expected sunrise using the actual road and walking times. There is no useful universal departure time for every property and season.

Carry a headlamp for a predawn start, rather than relying on a phone light while negotiating steps. Bring a wind-resistant layer, rain protection, drinking water and a small snack. Ask where the last toilet and water supply are before leaving the accommodation.

A later morning climb is a reasonable alternative if you prefer to see your footing in daylight or want a less hurried start. It changes the light and the chances of seeing low cloud, but removes the pressure to reach a particular spot before dawn. On either plan, agree when to turn around.

Choose a season without buying a promise of clouds

September into early October can combine the mountain outing with rice terraces around Ho Thau. The rice is below the summit, and its condition depends on the particular valley and harvest date. Ask about the fields near your accommodation if golden rice is part of the reason for traveling.

Cooler months can suit a trip focused on mountain views and low cloud, but a cloud-filled valley and a summit buried in mist are different outcomes. A clear panorama is also a good result. Keep the booking worthwhile through the local stay and landscape, even if the cloud scene you imagined never appears.

Before the climb, ask about wind, recent rain and the condition of the approach. Do not continue during thunderstorms, strong winds or a landslide warning. Stay with your guide and on the agreed route; leaving it for a photograph makes a weather change harder to manage.

Where to stay and how to book the outing

Ho Thau Eco Village in the Tan Phong area is an established community accommodation option with homestay rooms and bungalows. It is a base below the mountain, not a summit lodge. Other local stays include Chan Mui Homestay and Chan May Chieu Lau Thi; ask each property for its precise location and the planned transfer to the climb.

Confirm your actual room, bathroom, hot water, evening meal and early breakfast. Reserve the guide and mountain transport as named services rather than assuming they come with the bed. If conversation with the host or interpretation on the walk matters, request English support explicitly.

For an organized departure from Hanoi, PYS Travel offers a Hoang Su Phi–Chieu Lau Thi–Bac Ha itinerary. Its mountain morning follows a night in Ho Thau. This is a broader three-day circuit, so choose it if the onward places interest you; a private local arrangement gives you more control over time at the mountain.

PYS Travel’s contact is contact@pystravel.com, with Vietnam hotline 1900 3440. Request the exact departure, minimum group, room arrangement, English guide and final approach vehicle in one quote. A morning summit visit in a group itinerary should not be assumed to reach the top before sunrise.

If you hold a foreign passport, give the organizer your nationality and the complete proposed route when requesting the booking. Have them confirm any entry paperwork needed for border-area stops elsewhere in the itinerary and who arranges it. A quoted supplement for a wider tour should not be read as a universal ticket rule for the mountain alone.

A mountain-focused three-day plan

  1. Day one: travel from Hanoi to your agreed Ho Thau property, arrive in daylight where possible and settle the next morning’s plan over dinner.
  2. Day two: make the summit outing if conditions allow, then return for a meal and rest. Keep the afternoon flexible for a short village walk or an arranged tea experience.
  3. Day three: have breakfast and begin the return journey without adding a distant valley. Leave room for slow mountain roads rather than booking a fixed flight immediately afterward.

For a tea visit, ask which producer will receive you and whether the activity is a tasting, a garden walk or actual harvesting and processing. These depend on the household’s work and the season. A ceremonial performance is also a separate arrangement, not something to expect from every village stay.

Before paying, the useful agreement is specific: one accommodation, one confirmed approach, a walking route suited to your group and a plan for poor weather. That gives you a mountain trip you can assess, with enough flexibility to enjoy Ho Thau when the summit conditions change.
