Motorcycles are two or three-wheeled motor vehicles and similar, moving by engines with a cylinder capacity of 50 cm3 or more, the vehicle’s own tonnage not exceeding 400 kg.

Road rules for motorcycles in Vietnams determine the speed according to traffic junction zones, which are densely populated areas and out of densely populated areas (downtown or out of downtown).
Speed for motorcycles in Densely Populated Area in Vietnam
What is a Densely populated area? To define a Densely populated area, when driving on the road, you must pay attention to the sign on the right hand side of your direction. If you see an R.420 sign, then it is a Densely Populated Area.

- 2-way road ; 1-way road has 1 lane : MAX SPEED: 60 KM / HOUR

1. Enter a densely populated area in Vietnam

5. Direction to follow sign in Vietnam
In the Road rules for motorcycles in Vietnam, there are many types of direction signs to follow. But the most popular onces for you to ride a motorbike are the signs R301d, R301e, R301f, R301h. These signs force the motorcyclist in the lane to follow the direction of the arrow. For example, if you are in a lane marked with R301d, you must turn right and DO NOT GO STRAIGHT. If you go straight on purpose, you will be violating the Road rules for motorcycles. If it’s the sign R301f then it’s fine to go straight!
6. Lane for motorcycle sign in Vietnam
The motorbike lane signs can be posted on the right hand side of the way (picture 1) or hung (picture 2).
In figure 1, motorbike can only use lane 3. There are people in lane 2 and they all violate the Road rules for motorcycles in Vietnam. In Figure 2, motorbike has 3 lanes (2, 3,4). However, to ensure safety, you should only drive by motorbike in lane 3 or 4. With this road, cars can run 60 or 90km / hour, so it is very dangerous if you drive a motorbike there.
On roads without sign for motorbike with 2 or 3 lanes, you can use lanes 2 and 3. However, if you change lanes, you must have signals to ask for directions, ensuring safety. If there is a solid line between lanes 2 and 3, lane change is not allowed.
7. Speed limit sign in Vietnam
Speed limit signs are very common and this is the reason why many people violate the Road rules for motorcycles. There are 3 types of speed limit signs for motorcycles that I want to mention here:
- Speed limit stand alone
- Speed limit signs only applied to motorcycles
- Speed limit in meters
Stand alone speed limit sign: This sign is valid for all vehicles in the same direction, except for priority vehicle on duty. As the following figue, not only motorcycles are limited to a maximum speed of 40km / h. Cars must also run at the same speed.
Speed limit signs only apply to motorcycles : This type of signs specifies the speed of motorcycles. For example, in the photo below, the maximum speed for motorbikes is 50km / h in lane 3. If the motorcycle is in lane 4, the maximum speed allowed is 40km / h.
Speed limit in meters: This sign is essentially the same as Stand alone speed limit sign. But below has added an additional sign clearly stating the range of influence of the prohibition sign. For example, in the picture below, vehicles can only run at maximum 40km / hour. The range of application is from the sign position to the end of 800 meters.
The speed limit signs will expire when the expiration sign appears (details in item 8 below). Upon reaching the intersection, if there is no repeated speed limit sign, the prohibition effect is no longer available (according to regulation 41, 2019).
8. Prohibition expired sign
The Prohibition expired sign is very important. When being subject to the prohibition effect of the speed limit signs section 7 above, if you see the Prohibition expired sign, then drive at normal speed. There are 2 types of Prohibition expired signs:
- Completely Prohibition expired
- Expires to prohibit content on the sign
Completely Prohibition expired: Facing this sign means that all previous prohibitions are removed.
Expires to prohibit content on the sign: This sign has the meaning of deleting the speed limit of 40km / h. You must pay special attention when meeting this sign. It can only remove the effect of prohibiting the maximum speed of 40km / h and other prohibitions signs still apply. It is very different from the one above.
Road markings in Vietnam motorcyclists must know
1. Dotted line 2.1
This is the dividing line of lanes in the same direction, single line, dashed line: Used to divide lanes in the same direction. In this case, the vehicle is allowed to change lanes through line 2.1. In general, you can override this line, but you need to have a signal and ensure safety.
If this line is yellow, it will add meaning to no parking.
2. Solid line 2.2
Line 2.2: Lane dividing lanes in the same direction, single line, solid line: Used to divide lanes in the same direction in case it is not allowed to change lanes or use other lanes; vehicles must not encroach lanes, not overlap the line. When you meet this line, you must not drive a motorcycle. And you may not change lanes when meeting this line. If intentionally, it will violate the Traffic Law for motorbikes .
If this line is yellow, it will add meaning to neither stopping nor parking.
3. Dividing / merging lines, lanes
This line is used to divide the flow of vehicles into two directions, or merge them into 1. When you are on a motorcycle as well as another vehicle, you must not press on this line except in an emergency. Normally, touching this line will violate the Road rules for motorcycles in Vietnam.
