Co To Snorkeling and Scuba: Plan a Thanh Lan Outing

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

For snorkeling or an introductory scuba dive during a Co To stay, look at organized outings around Thanh Lan Island. Choose surface snorkeling if you mainly want to look at the reef; choose a supervised try dive if learning to use scuba equipment is the main attraction. These are different bookings, with different preparation and participation requirements.

Arrange the activity before fixing your island transport. Thanh Lan is separate from Co To’s main island, and a tour around its reefs does not necessarily require staying there. Confirm which island your pickup starts on, the actual meeting pin and where you will finish. A beach visit and a guided reef excursion also need separate planning.

Choose what you want to do in the water

Snorkeling: watch from the surface

A mask and snorkel let you look underwater while breathing at the surface. This suits someone more interested in watching than learning scuba skills, but swimming confidence and supervision still matter. Tell the operator if you have never used a snorkel or are uncomfortable away from shore; ask for instruction before the group moves over the reef.

Do not turn an ordinary snorkeling outing into improvised breath-hold training. If freediving is your aim, request a separate coached program and describe your experience. A mixed activity title does not explain the training, supervision or equipment you will receive.

Try diving: allow time to learn

An introductory scuba experience is a supervised first encounter with underwater breathing equipment, not a certification to dive independently. Ask who will instruct you, how you will practice before the dive and which language the briefing uses. Take time to understand the equipment, communication and how to stop the activity.

Complete the operator’s medical screening before committing to the outing, and obtain medical clearance if the screening requires it. A translated booking page does not establish that the instructor can explain the session in English. Resolve that before payment, especially if anyone has concerns they need to discuss precisely.

A direct operator to contact

CoTo Adventure, also called Công ty TNHH Khám phá Cô Tô, offers both formats at Thanh Lan. Its snorkeling itinerary combines pickup, boat transport, equipment, a guide and refreshments. The return journey starts about two and a half hours after pickup; allow additional time for the crossing and hotel drop-off.

The company’s Try Dive program is aimed at people without a diving certificate. It lists scuba equipment and one-to-one instruction, with a longer morning or afternoon itinerary. Confirm the actual practice, dive count and expected hotel return for your booking. Underwater walking is a separate extra.

For an inquiry, use +84 924 203 333 or sale@khamphacoto.com. Both programs accept requests from individuals joining a group. Ask whether a departure has enough participants, or request a private arrangement; sending an inquiry is not a confirmed place.

Get the island and pickup right

Give the organizer your accommodation’s full name and map pin, not just “Co To.” Ask it to return one written plan covering the hotel collection, boat departure, activity and final drop-off. If you will stay on Thanh Lan itself, establish whether you can join locally and whether the price or schedule changes.

Do not buy an extra inter-island ferry ticket simply because a tour mentions a Thanh Lan pier. Have the organizer identify the boarding point and confirm which crossings are already included. Otherwise, you could reach the right island after the activity boat has left.

For mainland arrival from Hai Phong, the Hai Phong to Ao Tien private transfer covers the road journey to the port. Send the confirmed passenger-boat check-in deadline when arranging pickup. The sea passage to the islands and the reef outing require their own bookings.

Use the Co To island travel guide for the wider stay. If your priority is sleeping on the quieter neighboring island, the Thanh Lan guide explains that different arrival and accommodation plan.

Place the outing in the middle of your stay

As a planning choice, arrive and settle in first, then leave a full island day for the water activity. Avoid pairing it with the last possible mainland boat. A delayed pickup, an extended briefing or a changed return landing can leave little room for a fixed connection.

A boat being able to sail does not establish suitable conditions for snorkeling or diving. Ask about the actual reef site, visibility, water movement and supervision for your group. Agree beforehand what happens if the reef activity is cancelled, shortened or replaced by sightseeing; those outcomes may have different refund arrangements.

After scuba, leave the required interval before flying. For divers without decompression-sickness symptoms, commonly used minimums are 12 hours after one no-decompression dive and 18 hours after repeated no-decompression dives; longer intervals reduce risk further. Have the instructor apply the guidance to your actual dives and onward itinerary. Do not squeeze a trial dive into a flight-departure day.

Keep the reef visit manageable

For children, ask about the exact program’s age rules, equipment fit and supervision. A discounted ticket does not establish that the water activity is appropriate. Also agree what happens if one person wants to remain aboard or stop early, including whether a nonparticipating companion can join.

Ask how you will enter and leave the water, whether the boat has a suitable ladder, and what support is available if you become tired. Keep within the guide’s agreed area and away from moving boats. Skip an activity whose briefing you cannot follow or whose conditions exceed your comfort.

Keep hands and fins clear of coral, do not stand on the reef and do not feed or chase fish. Leave shells and other marine life where they are. Choose observation over photographs that require touching animals or disturbing the seabed.

Confirm the complete price before paying

Request a quote for the named activity, date and people in your party. Check pickup coverage, boat travel, equipment, instruction, refreshments and any photography charge. Ask what insurance applies to foreign participants and to the exact activity; a general passenger policy is not automatically personal dive cover.

Keep the written confirmation with your island booking. The useful result is one clear plan: where to meet, what you will do, who will supervise it, when you should return and what happens if conditions change. If that plan does not suit the group, use the day for Thanh Lan’s coastal scenery instead.
