Thanh Lan Island suits travelers who want a quiet inhabited island, forest-backed beaches and a slower stay in the Co To archipelago. Choose it for time by the sea and everyday island life, with accommodation and meals arranged ahead. Choose Co To’s main island instead if a wider choice of hotels, restaurants and evening activities matters more.
Thanh Lan is a separate island in Quang Ninh, not another beach on Co To’s main island and not Co To Con. You can travel directly from Ao Tien on a confirmed Thanh Lan sailing or arrange a separate crossing from Co To. For a first stay, allow two nights so you have a full day between the outward and return boats.
Reach Thanh Lan directly or include it in a Co To stay
Direct boat from Ao Tien
Nguyen Viet, written Nguyên Việt, operates the Ao Tien–Thanh Lan high-speed passenger route. Select Thanh Lan as the destination when checking sailings. A ticket to Co To’s main island does not automatically include the next crossing.
Allow around 90 minutes on the water as a planning estimate, with extra time for check-in and boarding. Confirm the actual sailing in both directions before booking your island stay. Departures are limited enough that choosing the wrong day or assuming a late return can substantially change the trip.
An adult fare of around VND 350,000 each way is a useful initial budget. Check the fare for your date, the child’s age and seat entitlement, and whether the separate Ao Tien terminal charge is included. Use the confirmed booking total rather than multiplying an old promotional price.
The operator’s contact is 0363 222 886, or +84 363 222 886, and nguyenviet.taucaotoc@gmail.com. Be at the port at least 30 minutes before departure, or earlier if your booking specifies it. Carry your original passport and establish which entry documents the operator needs for your circumstances.
If you start in Hai Phong, the Hai Phong to Ao Tien private transfer covers the mainland road leg. Send the boat’s check-in deadline when arranging pickup. Boat tickets, the island arrival transfer and the return journey need their own arrangements.
Crossing from Co To’s main island
A Thanh Lan outing can also fit into a longer Co To island stay. Arrange the named departure pier, Thanh Lan landing, return boat and local transport together. This works best when you can move the outing if conditions change, rather than treating a smaller-island crossing as a guaranteed final-day connection.
For travelers already staying on Co To, a day outing avoids changing hotels. For travelers whose main interest is Thanh Lan itself, a direct arrival and two nights on the island avoid repeatedly packing and transferring. Do not build a mainland day trip around an assumed morning outward boat and evening return.
If reef viewing is the main reason for your outing, compare Thanh Lan snorkeling and introductory scuba trips before arranging transport. Confirm the pickup island, supervision and participation requirements separately from a beach visit.
Ba Chau: the main beach outing to plan around
Ba Chau Beach, or Bãi Ba Châu, lies southeast of the island’s central settlement. The approach follows a concrete road for roughly 3.5 km and crosses a long slope. Arrange a ride if you do not want the uphill return to become the main exertion of a beach afternoon.
The long curve of sand sits between wooded headlands, with rocks toward its ends. Its appeal is space for a beach walk, coastal views and time away from the landing area. The forested approach makes it a different experience from stepping straight out of a town-center hotel onto a promenade.
Choose swimming according to the conditions that day and local instructions. An attractive arc of sand does not guarantee shallow water, gentle surf or a staffed swimming zone. Have your driver or host explain where to meet again, and take the supplies you need rather than relying on a particular beach stall being open.
Vung Tron and Hai Quan: another coastal landscape
Vung Tron is a smaller beach along the approach toward Hai Quan Beach. Reaching it involves a roughly 400-meter path through woodland. It is a worthwhile change of scene if a short walk and a smaller cove appeal more than visiting another long stretch of sand.
Wear footwear with grip and ask about the path after rain. The final walk means it is not the same as a vehicle-accessible beach stop; travelers with limited mobility should discuss the route before including it. Use the established visitor path rather than turning the surrounding forest into an improvised hike.
You do not need to collect every beach name in one circuit. Choose Ba Chau as the main outing, then consider Vung Tron and the Hai Quan area if weather, transport and walking conditions suit. A flexible second coast stop is more useful than a prepaid sequence of beaches with no time to stay at any of them.
The island’s church and fishing-community setting
Nhà thờ giáo họ Thanh Lân serves the island’s Catholic community. Many parishioners have family roots in the Hai Hau and Bui Chu areas of Nam Dinh. The church gives a village visit a different focus from the beach scenery and helps explain the community connections across northern Vietnam’s coast.
Approach it as a working place of worship. Ask before entering, avoid interrupting services and dress respectfully. A view of the building and a quiet walk through the settled area can be enough; do not assume a daily visitor tour or an open interior.
Plan a seafood meal through your host and agree on the dishes, quantities and total before ordering. A simple cooked fish or squid meal can fit the island setting without turning dinner into an expensive tasting menu. State allergies or a need for a non-seafood meal early, when the host can still plan supplies.
Book the island stay as carefully as the boat
Expect small guesthouses and homestays rather than choosing Thanh Lan for a large resort’s facilities. Confirm that the property is physically on Thanh Lan Island: “Co To” in an address can refer to the wider island area. Obtain the landing pickup instructions with the room confirmation.
For foreign guests, have the host confirm that it can receive and register your stay, and establish any arrival documents or arrangements before paying a nonrefundable deposit. Keep your passport available for the boat and accommodation. Do not substitute an informal beach camp for a confirmed place to stay.
The useful details are straightforward: air-conditioning or a fan, private or shared bathroom, hot water, meals, drinking-water refills and the transport available to your chosen beaches. Ask for current room photographs. A beachfront label alone says little about access, comfort or whether the sea is suitable for swimming.
A two-night plan with room for the sea to change
- Arrival day: travel on the confirmed boat, meet the arranged pickup and settle into your room. Keep the first outing close enough to abandon if the crossing runs late.
- Full island day: choose Ba Chau for the main beach visit, with a meal break and either the church area or Vung Tron as a second stop. Let wind and path conditions determine the order.
- Departure day: work backward from the actual boat check-in. A morning return can leave little or no sightseeing time, so complete your important island visits the previous day.
Keep a mainland buffer before an international flight or another connection you cannot move. An extra night is useful only if your wider itinerary can absorb disruption; it cannot guarantee that boats will sail. Follow the operator’s departure notice and marine conditions, not just the rain symbol on a city weather app.
Bring reusable bags and a refillable bottle, arrange drinking water with the accommodation and take rubbish back from the beaches. Leave coral and shells where they are. Thanh Lan is a rewarding choice when you want time in one island community and accept that the crossing, weather and simple facilities shape the visit.
