For a trip from Ho Chi Minh City to Cat Ba Island, start by comparing flights to Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong (HPH). It is the most direct airport option for the usual road-and-ferry approach to the island. Flying to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi (HAN) also makes sense when the flight timing is better or you want to visit Hanoi first.
Neither flight takes you onto Cat Ba itself. You still need transport to an island crossing and another road leg to your accommodation. Choose the flight and the onward transfer together: a late landing can leave you on the mainland overnight.
Which airport should you choose?
- Cat Bi, Hai Phong: the first option to check when Cat Ba is your next stop and you want to minimize the ground journey.
- Noi Bai, Hanoi: useful for a Hanoi stopover, a suitable flight fare or a better arrival time, with a longer onward journey to the island.
- Van Don, Quang Ninh: consider it mainly when your wider trip includes Quang Ninh. Check an actual flight and the complete onward route before comparing it with Cat Bi.
1. Fly to Hai Phong and continue to Cat Ba
Search for a flight from Tan Son Nhat (SGN) to Cat Bi (HPH). Compare the fare including the baggage you need, the arrival time and the cost of onward transport. A slightly more expensive flight that connects comfortably with your island transfer may be more useful than a late-night bargain.
How the road-and-ferry connection works
The usual route runs from Hai Phong to Dong Bai ferry terminal, across to Cai Vieng on Cat Ba Island, then by road to Cat Ba town or your hotel. Reaching the ferry terminal is only part of the journey. Send your accommodation’s name and map pin when arranging the final drop-off.
The Hai Phong to Cat Ba transfer coordinates this journey with two vehicles. The first takes you to Dong Bai; you board the ferry as a foot passenger, and a second vehicle meets you on the island for your hotel or agreed Ben Beo pier drop-off. The ferry ticket is included.
Specify Cat Bi Airport pickup, your flight number and your luggage when requesting the transfer. Ask for the meeting instructions and how a flight delay will be handled. The route’s approximate two-hour transfer time is a starting estimate, not a deadline for arrival; ferry boarding, traffic and your final destination can extend it.
With a vehicle change, keep your bags manageable and carry your passport, phone and valuables with you. Request assistance in advance if steps, walking aboard or moving suitcases could be difficult. Traveling as a foot passenger avoids waiting for a place for your car, but it does not remove every possible queue or weather delay.
Using the cable car instead
The Sun World cable car crosses from Cat Hai to Phu Long. It does not deliver you to central Cat Ba town: arrange transport from Cat Bi to the departure station and from Phu Long to your hotel.
Check the operating calendar and last boarding time for your date before building the connection around it. Confirm the island-side ride and baggage arrangements too. Treat this as a separate routing choice, rather than an automatic part of a ferry-transfer booking.
2. Fly to Hanoi and travel onward to Cat Ba
Search SGN to HAN. This route works for independent travelers as well as tour customers. Choose between continuing after landing and spending a night in Hanoi according to the onward departure you can comfortably reach.
Connect with a shared bus
Operators such as Cat Ba Express sell Hanoi-to-Cat Ba bus journeys with the island crossing coordinated as part of the trip. The crossing can use a speedboat, cable car or ferry depending on the package. Confirm which option you are buying, where you board and where the vehicle can drop you near your hotel.
A Hanoi city pickup is not the same as a Noi Bai Airport pickup. If your departure is from the Old Quarter or a central office, allow for baggage collection, the airport-to-city ride and the operator’s advance check-in time. Do not book the bus using your flight’s landing time as the time you will be ready to leave.
For a coordinated city-to-island bus journey, allow roughly four hours or longer after the city departure, with extra time for collection and disruption. The airport leg comes before that. A late arrival often fits an overnight stay in Hanoi followed by a morning transfer more comfortably.
Arrange an airport-origin transfer
If you want to continue from Noi Bai without entering central Hanoi, request a transfer explicitly starting at the airport. Ask for a complete plan covering the mainland vehicle, crossing and island vehicle, together with the latest arrival it can accommodate. A city-origin fare should not be assumed to cover this arrangement.
For either option, an ordinary one-way transfer and a sightseeing tour have different purposes. If your aim is to check into a Cat Ba hotel, book transport that finishes there rather than assuming a day tour will accept your luggage and let you leave its return itinerary.
3. Consider Van Don only when the wider route fits
Van Don Airport (VDO) is a separate Quang Ninh arrival point, not a Cat Ba airport. If it suits a Quang Ninh stopover, first check a bookable flight for your date, then price the full transfer to the island. Do not plan around an assumed free airport shuttle or an unconfirmed onward ferry.
If an onward plan uses Tuan Chau and Gia Luan, obtain the actual departure and island-side hotel transfer together. Gia Luan is not Cat Ba town. This is a connection to organize for a specific itinerary, rather than the default alternative to flying into nearby Hai Phong.
Plan the arrival day before paying
- Confirm the final usable crossing: ask the transport provider which flight arrival it can realistically connect with, including baggage collection and a delay allowance.
- Have a late-arrival plan: if the connection no longer works, stay in Hai Phong or Hanoi and continue the next morning instead of heading to a closed departure point.
- Send the exact destination: a hotel in town, a rural homestay and a cruise pier need different drop-offs. Follow your cruise operator’s actual pier and check-in instructions.
- Check the complete price: include flight baggage, airport pickup, crossing tickets, island transport and any late-night or waiting charges.
- Leave sightseeing flexible: put a fixed-departure boat trip on a later day when possible, especially if you are arriving on a separate flight ticket.
For a straightforward Cat Ba stay, compare Cat Bi flights first and secure the ground connection before committing to your arrival-day plans. Use Hanoi when it improves the overall itinerary, and reserve Van Don for a trip that genuinely includes Quang Ninh.
