Mai Hich suits travelers who want a village stay beyond Mai Chau’s central Lac Village and Pom Coong area, with rice-field walks, Thai stilt houses and an optional bamboo-raft outing on the Xia stream. Stay one night for a short introduction, or two if you want a longer guided walk without fitting it around the journey from Hanoi.
The main decision is your accommodation and its immediate surroundings. Choose Mai Hich for time with a village host and activities arranged locally; choose the central valley if you prefer more independent choices close together. A booking labeled simply "Mai Chau" does not identify which of these experiences you will have.
Where Mai Hich is, and which address to use
Mai Hich is roughly 13 km from Mai Chau’s former district center. The name still appears in accommodation listings, but the former Mai Hich commune is now part of Bao La commune, Phu Tho Province. Older addresses may say Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province.
Use the property’s name, map pin and village name when arranging your arrival. Hich 1 and Hich 2 are useful names to recognize; the wider Bao La area also includes other villages, including Buoc. These are not interchangeable drop-off points. If you want to walk out toward the Xia stream from your accommodation, ask the host to show that route before booking.
The Mai Chau travel guide explains the central valley and the separate lakeside accommodation areas. That distinction matters here: a resort selling a Mai Hich excursion may be a substantial drive from the village itself.
Choose a sleeping arrangement, not just a homestay label
Mai Hich has traditional stilt-house hospitality as well as accommodation built around more private rooms. Maison De Mai Hich and Mai Hich Farmstay are two named properties to compare in the area. Treat them as starting points for checking the room and location, rather than assuming every room at a property offers the same facilities.
For a traditional stay, establish whether you are reserving a private bedroom, an individual mattress in a shared sleeping space, or the whole sleeping area for your group. Ask where the bathroom is and whether reaching it involves stairs. A photograph of an attractive stilt house tells you little about nighttime privacy or the walk to the toilet.
If you need an enclosed bedroom, air-conditioning or a private bathroom, get those details confirmed for the exact room category. For children or someone with limited mobility, also request a photograph of the entrance and room approach. Do not infer step-free access from a bungalow description.
Ask about dinner at the same time as the room. An agreed meal at your accommodation makes an outlying stay easier than arriving late and expecting to walk between restaurants. Tell the host about dietary restrictions before ingredients are bought, and agree on the price and dishes separately from the room if meals are not included.
Walking and cycling: a short village loop or a longer outing
For your arrival afternoon, start with a host-recommended walk around Hich 2 and nearby fields. Have the host mark a return loop and explain which paths are public. This leaves time to stop without making your first outing depend on finding an unfamiliar connecting trail before dark.
A bicycle helps cover more of the valley, but a local village ride and a multi-village route are different commitments. Check the bike fit, brakes and helmet, and ask how much of the route uses roads shared with vehicles. For an uneven or muddy field section, walking the bicycle may be the sensible option; a narrow raised field edge is not automatically a cycle path.
A guided route linking Mai Ha, Kha, Te, Buoc and Mai Hich
Mai Chau Hideaway offers a named outing through Mai Ha, Kha, Te, Buoc and Mai Hich, with road transfers, an English-speaking local guide and lunch. It combines walking and village visits, making it an option for travelers who want a planned route rather than navigating between settlements themselves.
Reserve a full-day block for this outing. Before booking, ask for the actual walking distance, vehicle sections, pickup point and return time. A walking-duration estimate is not the same as the total time away once transfers and lunch are included.
Contact Mai Chau Hideaway reception on +84 963 406 366 and use the full route name. The resort is in Suoi Lon, Tan Mai, by the lake, not in Mai Hich village. If you are sleeping in Mai Hich or elsewhere, confirm whether you can join, where you meet and whether collection from your property is included. Do not travel to the resort merely assuming an outing is available that day.
Bamboo rafting on the Xia stream
Bamboo rafting is one of Mai Hich’s community-tourism activities. The stream appears as both Xia and Sia in English descriptions. Arrange the outing through your host with a local person responsible for operating the raft, rather than treating a raft by the water as equipment available for independent use.
Settle the launch point, landing point, time on the water and any return walk or vehicle transfer. Ask for correctly fitting life jackets for everyone, including children, and let the local operator decide whether the water conditions allow the trip. Fast, rising or debris-filled water is a reason to change the plan, not to seek a more adventurous version.
A combined Mai Chau and Pu Luong package may place its bamboo-raft activity near Chieng Lau in Pu Luong. That is a different stop. If rafting in Mai Hich is important to you, specify the Xia stream and confirm which day and location your booking includes.
Keep a land-based alternative available. A short walk, a meal with your host or an arranged textile visit can fill the time if the stream outing cannot run. Avoid making a long transfer solely for a river activity that has not been confirmed.
Food, weaving and evenings with a host
Meals can introduce sticky rice, hill chicken and pork seasoned with mac khen, a regional aromatic spice. Ask what the household plans to cook rather than ordering from an assumed standard village menu. An arranged meal also gives you a useful chance to learn the names of dishes and how the host serves them.
Community services may involve several households: your accommodation can arrange a bicycle, raft or performance through other local providers. Agree on who is organizing the activity and who receives payment. A room reservation alone does not book a cultural show, a weaving lesson or a household visit.
If textiles are your main interest, distinguish watching a maker from taking a hands-on class. Ask for the specific task, instructor and session time. The Mai Chau weaving workshop guide covers organized textile experiences elsewhere in the valley; they require separate travel and arrangements from a Mai Hich stay.
For an evening performance, ask whether one is planned for your group and whether the charge is per person or per group. You can enjoy the music and dancing without drinking rice wine. Request permission before photographing people or entering the private part of a house.
A useful one-night or two-night stay
- One night: arrive with daylight left, take a short village walk, have dinner with your host and use the following morning for one arranged activity before departure.
- Two nights: keep the arrival afternoon short, use the complete middle day for the longer guided village route, and leave the final morning flexible for a brief cycle or confirmed stream outing.
Do not stack a long walking route and a fixed rafting appointment into the same day without agreement from both organizers. Heat, muddy paths and the pace of your group can change how much ground you cover. For rice-field photography, ask for a recent local photograph before choosing dates; flooded, green, harvested and planted fields produce very different scenes.
Getting from Hanoi to your Mai Hich accommodation
A Hanoi to Mai Chau private transfer can be requested for the journey into the area. Send your Mai Hich property’s exact pin and obtain confirmation of the drop-off and total quote. The general Mai Chau estimate of about 3.5 hours is a starting point for planning, not a guaranteed arrival time at an outlying village property.
If you use a shared bus, establish its actual final stop before paying. A ticket to Mai Chau may still leave a local journey to your accommodation. Arrange that connection with the host, including luggage space and a telephone contact for the arrival day.
For a rewarding Mai Hich stay, book the room you actually need and one activity you particularly want to do. Leave some time around them. The village works well as a place to walk, eat and stay at a slower pace; the most useful booking message names your dates, room requirements, arrival point and chosen outing.
