Vinh Thuc Island: Beaches, Lighthouse and Boats from Mong Cai

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

Vinh Thuc suits a separate island day or a quiet overnight stay during a Mong Cai trip. The main reasons to go are Dau Dong and Ben Hen beaches, the landscape around Vinh Thuc Lighthouse and the island’s fishing and farming communities. Choose it when you want time on land by the sea, with a simple local meal and a slower pace.

The usual approach is by road to Mui Ngoc landing near Mong Cai, then a passenger boat to the island’s Van Gia side. The water crossing can take roughly 10–20 minutes in suitable conditions, but the beaches and lighthouse require another journey after landing. Reserve most of a day from Mong Cai rather than treating the short crossing as the length of the excursion.

Day trip or overnight: make this choice first

  • Choose a day trip if you are already staying in Mong Cai and want a lighthouse visit, one beach and lunch. Arrange the island vehicle and return boat together.
  • Choose one night if the early or late light, a long beach walk and an unhurried evening matter more than seeing every landmark. Book the room, meals and pier pickup before crossing.
  • Stay on the mainland if sea transport is uncertain, your arrival is late or you need a firm same-day onward connection. Tra Co and the nearby coastal sights give you a useful alternative.

Vinh Thuc is an inhabited island, with homes, fields, working boats and small tourism businesses. It is a good fit for travelers comfortable with locally arranged services. If your priorities are a large resort’s facilities, extensive restaurant choice or a busy evening program, choose accommodation elsewhere before committing to the boat.

Getting to the correct boat landing

Ask for bến Mũi Ngọc when arranging the mainland transfer. The familiar Binh Ngoc name still appears in older directions; current addresses can use Mong Cai 1. Send the exact boarding pin from your boat provider to the driver, especially if arriving by an intercity coach that stops in central Mong Cai.

A ticket to Mong Cai does not automatically include the local ride to Mui Ngoc. Likewise, a boat booking does not automatically include transport from Van Gia to your beach or guesthouse. The Hai Phong to Mong Cai trip guide helps you plan the wider road journey and mainland stops before adding this island day.

Buy a specific passenger crossing, with the departure point, island landing and return arrangement written down. Clarify whether the quote is for one shared seat, a private boat or a package including island transport. A low-looking one-way fare and a complete island outing cover different things.

Before leaving the mainland, settle three details that affect the whole day: who meets you on the island, which return sailing you are booked on and what happens if sea conditions interrupt the service. Carry enough Vietnamese dong for separately charged meals and local transport, and keep your boarding contact available offline.

International visitors should tell the organizer their nationality when arranging the trip and confirm the identification and access arrangements for their itinerary. Bring your passport and valid Vietnam travel documents. This is a Vietnamese island visit; do not assume that a local outing includes any international border crossing.

Vinh Thuc Lighthouse: plan the land journey as well as the climb

The lighthouse stands on Dau Tan hill in the northern part of the island. Its purpose is still maritime navigation, which gives the stop a different character from a purpose-built viewing tower. The approach passes through an island landscape of hills, water, fields and settlements.

The road journey from the usual island landing to the lighthouse is substantial, commonly described as roughly 15 km. Include it in the vehicle arrangement; arriving by boat does not put you at the foot of the tower. A car or electric-vehicle circuit with agreed waiting time is more practical for many visitors than trying to organize each leg separately.

There are steps on the approach, so wear footwear with grip and take water. Confirm which visitor areas are open that day and whether the tower itself can be entered. A photograph of someone at the top does not establish unrestricted access whenever you arrive.

The reward is the coastal setting and the view when visibility allows. Keep the plan flexible in strong wind, rain or poor visibility; you can enjoy the beaches and island roads without making a tower climb the condition for a successful visit. Travelers with limited mobility should discuss the actual drop-off and walking requirement before paying for this stop.

Dau Dong and Ben Hen: choose a beach, not a checklist

Dau Dong Beach

Dau Dong has a curved sandy shoreline with casuarina trees and rocky coastal features. It is a natural first choice for a beach walk, photographs and time looking out to sea. Leave room to enjoy the shore rather than arriving only long enough to tick off its name.

For a day trip with the lighthouse, ask the island driver to put the stops in the most sensible order for the weather and your lunch location. If you only have time for one beach, a longer stop at Dau Dong is more rewarding than a hurried attempt to include both.

Ben Hen Beach

Ben Hen is associated with the former Vinh Trung area, now within Vinh Thuc commune. The broad sand and casuarina-backed setting make it another option for a relaxed shore stop. The older Vinh Trung name refers to a part of this island, not a second island you need another boat to reach.

Choose Ben Hen if it fits your booked stay or the facilities operating during your visit. Ask where meals, toilets and changing facilities are available before settling in for a long afternoon. Do not assume every stretch of beach has the same services.

At either beach, swim only where local safety arrangements are operating and conditions permit. Follow current instructions and keep clear of working boats. Calm-looking photographs do not tell you the wind, current or supervision on your own day; a shore walk remains worthwhile when swimming is unsuitable.

Meals and a night on the island

Seafood is the obvious starting point for lunch, including fish, squid, shrimp and crab according to the day’s supply. Choose a few cooked dishes to share with rice and vegetables. Establish the price and weight before seafood is prepared, and ask whether cooking charges are included.

For one or two people, arranging a meal with a guesthouse or dining host can be easier than relying on a large group menu. Give the number of diners and any dietary needs in advance. Fishing-village scenery does not mean every household is a restaurant or that every catch is available for lunch.

If staying overnight, choose by the room and location rather than the word “homestay.” Confirm the bed arrangement, bathroom, cooling, meal service and distance to the beach you want. Ask for the actual room photographs and the pickup meeting point at Van Gia.

Use the evening for a meal and a quiet shore or village walk where access is open. A fishing outing, boat ride after dark or seafood-gathering activity needs a separate arrangement with a suitable operator; it should not be assumed to come with a room booking.

A realistic first-visit plan

For a day from Mong Cai: reach Mui Ngoc for your confirmed outward crossing, meet the island driver and visit the lighthouse area while conditions suit it. Have lunch, then give one beach a proper afternoon stop before the agreed return to Van Gia. Keep the final boat margin intact instead of adding another distant beach.

For one night: cross with time to reach your accommodation, eat and spend the afternoon by the shore. Use the following morning for the lighthouse or the other beach, according to the return boat you have booked. These are suggested sequences, not advertised departure schedules.

The warmer months can suit a beach-focused trip, but rain, storms and rough water can interrupt both boating and swimming. Cooler weather can still suit walks and meals if swimming is optional. Check marine conditions before driving to the landing and avoid a plan that depends on the last boat making a flight or long-distance departure.

Vinh Thuc or Cai Chien

Choose Vinh Thuc when you are already exploring Mong Cai and want the lighthouse-and-beach combination. Cai Chien Island is a separate alternative off the Hai Ha coast, with its own beaches and mainland connection through the Ghenh Vo area. Decide which island fits the journey before booking the pier transfer.

Do not assume there is a convenient scheduled island-hopping service between them. For a short trip, one island with a settled boat and accommodation plan gives you more leisure time than trying to combine both.

Vinh Thuc’s appeal is the combination of an ordinary working island and space to enjoy the coast. Keep the visit simple: the right landing, an island pickup, one main beach and a return plan. Bring a refillable bottle, use the local waste-collection arrangements and leave the shoreline as you found it.
