Calypso Cruise Review: Lan Ha Cabins, Route and Trade-Offs

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

Calypso suits travelers looking for a Lan Ha Bay overnight cruise with a sundeck pool, a kayak or rowed-boat outing and a visit to Cat Ba Island. Calypso I and II each have 20 cabins. They are steel vessels with wooden interiors, and the room category determines whether you have a window or your own balcony.

Choose two days for Dark and Bright Cave plus Hospital Cave on Cat Ba. The three-day HPT program adds a separate day boat to Viet Hai, kayaking at Tai Queo and swimming in the Ba Trai Dao area. The longer trip offers more activities, but also more time away from your overnight cabin.

Calypso Cruise at a glance

  • Route: Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba, with tender boarding from Tuan Chau.
  • Trip lengths: two days and one night, or three days and two nights.
  • Fleet: Calypso I and Calypso II, each promoted with 20 cabins.
  • Cabin choices: bay-view window, private balcony and connecting family categories.
  • Main facilities: restaurant, 300-square-meter sundeck and a top-deck Jacuzzi pool.
  • Best for: couples and active families who want Lan Ha scenery plus a Cat Ba land visit.
  • Less suitable for: guests needing step-free access, extensive resort facilities or long quiet periods onboard.

Window, balcony or connecting cabins

Deluxe: a window onto the bay

The Deluxe cabin is about 20 square meters, with a bay-view window, air-conditioning and a private bathroom. Confirm whether your reservation has a double or twin arrangement. A maximum-occupancy figure does not mean a third full-size bed is already installed.

This category can suit guests who are happy using the shared decks for outdoor time. Do not treat the window view as equivalent to a private balcony.

Deluxe Balcony: outdoor space on the second deck

The Deluxe Balcony category is also listed at around 20 square meters, with balcony cabins on the second deck. It gives you a separate outdoor seating space adjoining the room.

If balcony size, position or access matters, ask for the assigned cabin details. For children, consider how the balcony door is secured and how you will supervise access; a family booking does not remove that responsibility.

Family Deluxe: two internally connected rooms

Family Deluxe accommodation uses two rooms joined by an internal door, with connecting pairs on the first deck. Confirm that both rooms are included and that the connection is guaranteed, rather than accepting two nearby rooms as equivalent.

Request the bed arrangement for the whole pair and give every child’s age. Clarify any shared-bed or extra-bed charge before comparing the total with another cabin category.

The two-day itinerary

The Calypso two-day, one-night cruise begins at Tuan Chau, where a smaller boat transfers guests to the overnight vessel. Lunch is followed by an afternoon in the Dark and Bright Cave area, using a kayak or a sampan with a local rower.

The usual water-level passage and lagoon outing is different from walking inside a dry cave. A rowed sampan can be useful if you prefer not to paddle, though it still requires boarding a small craft. Swimming in the bay depends on conditions; you can also spend time on the ship.

The next morning includes a trip onto Cat Ba Island to visit Quan Y, or Hospital Cave, before returning for checkout and an early meal. This visit involves a road connection on the island and walking at the cave. Plan around the current boarding instructions, rather than an old itinerary mentioning Got Harbor or a different cave.

What the third day adds

The Calypso three-day, two-night cruise adds a middle-day excursion on a separate day boat. At Viet Hai, you can cycle to the village or use the electric-car alternative. The program then includes lunch on the day boat, kayaking around Tai Queo and a swimming stop in the Ba Trai Dao area before returning to Calypso.

Tai Queo kayaking and Ba Trai Dao swimming are separate parts of the outing. A swimming stop does not guarantee a beach landing, and the day’s route can change with conditions. Confirm the alternative if you do not want to cycle, kayak or swim.

The HPT three-day package lists Hospital Cave for the final morning. Have the itinerary sent with your booking and check the named cave and island connection, particularly if that visit is a reason for choosing the cruise.

Take a day bag with water, sun protection, a towel and anything you need while away from your cabin. If you would rather spend the middle day resting, agree on whether remaining on the overnight vessel is possible and what arrangements apply.

The pool and life on board

Calypso has a pool on the sundeck, along with the restaurant and outdoor seating. Check pool access and use rules on boarding; do not assume it is heated or that children can use it without adult supervision.

Cooking and food-decoration demonstrations, morning Tai Chi and evening squid fishing provide activities between excursions. Join according to the day’s schedule and your preferences. The shared restaurant and decks also mean this is a group cruise, not a promise of private or silent surroundings.

Wi-Fi is listed in public areas. If reliable internet access matters for work or calls, make a separate plan instead of depending on a connection throughout the bay.

Meals, transfers and booking details

The HPT packages include the onboard meals in their itineraries, round-trip road transfers, sightseeing fees and the listed activities. Pickup options include Hanoi Old Quarter, Hai Phong and Tam Coc. Confirm the exact pickup and return points, especially when continuing somewhere different after the cruise.

Vietnamese dishes are served, and vegetarian meals can be requested in advance. State vegan ingredients or allergies separately and have the kitchen confirm what it can accommodate. On the three-day trip, include the day-boat lunch in that request. Drinks and other unlisted services are extra.

If mobility is a concern, discuss the entire route from the pier to the cabin, restaurant, sundeck and excursions. A first-deck cabin alone does not establish step-free access, and the journey includes small-boat transfers.

Is Calypso suitable for children?

Calypso can suit school-age children who are confident around water and interested in kayaking, swimming and the Cat Ba visit. The connecting first-deck rooms solve a practical family problem, while the pool provides another activity between excursions.

Parents must supervise balconies, the pool, tenders and open decks. Confirm child life-jacket sizes, the connecting door, pool rules, suitable meals and the exact bed plan. Child pricing uses the birth year and a free child may share existing bedding, so ask for a complete family total rather than applying a percentage yourself.

Seniors and limited mobility

The rowed sampan at Dark and Bright Cave reduces the need to paddle, but passengers still step into a small craft. Hospital Cave requires a road transfer on Cat Ba and walking through a historic underground site. The three-day program adds day-boat boarding, cycling or an electric vehicle, and another kayak session.

Ask for the assigned cabin deck, number of stairs, handrails, bathroom thresholds and help available at each transfer. An electric car at Viet Hai is useful for non-cyclists, but it does not make the entire itinerary wheelchair-accessible. Arrange any stay-onboard option before sailing.

Weather and seasonal limits

Lan Ha Bay activities remain subject to wind, thunderstorms, visibility, water level and local instructions. Swimming, jumping from the permitted area, Tai Queo kayaking and Ba Trai Dao access can be changed or canceled. The exposed pool and sundeck may also close temporarily in unsafe conditions.

Ask what the confirmed terms provide if the route is shortened or departure is canceled. Bring shoes with grip, sun protection and a light rain layer. Do not schedule a tight flight or train after the advertised return because port procedures, tender timing and road traffic can cause delays.

What is included and what costs extra?

The current Hai Phong Tours packages include the selected cabin, round-trip road transfer, meals shown in the itinerary, guide, entrance fees, Tai Chi, welcome drink and farewell tea, a kayak or locally rowed sampan, public-area Wi-Fi and use of the sundeck pool.

Drinks and anything not named are extra. Confirm spa availability, holiday supplements, child charges and any private transport before payment. On the three-day trip, make sure the day-boat lunch and all planned activities appear on the voucher.

Advantages of Calypso Cruise

  • Twenty cabins create a more compact ship than many new large vessels.
  • Window, balcony and connecting categories cover different rooming needs.
  • The Lan Ha and Cat Ba route combines water scenery with a land-cave visit.
  • Kayak and rowed-boat choices support different activity levels at Dark and Bright Cave.
  • The sundeck pool adds a useful onboard option.
  • The three-day program offers cycling or an electric vehicle at Viet Hai.

Limitations to accept

  • The booking may use Calypso I or II, so the assigned vessel must be confirmed.
  • Deluxe window cabins do not have private balconies.
  • The two-day cabin stay is short and the final morning starts early.
  • Tender transfers, Hospital Cave and small boats create mobility barriers.
  • The three-day middle day takes place away from the overnight cabin.
  • Swimming, kayaking and Ba Trai Dao access depend on conditions.

Final booking checklist

  1. Confirm Calypso I or II and obtain the current deck plan.
  2. Record the cabin category, deck, window or balcony, beds and occupancy.
  3. Choose two or three days from the named activities and desired pace.
  4. Ask about the sampan, electric-car and stay-onboard alternatives.
  5. Send dietary, allergy, mobility and child requirements in writing.
  6. Confirm the Tuan Chau meeting point, transfer and luggage plan.
  7. Check drinks, child charges, supplements and cancellation terms.
  8. Bring original passports for overnight registration.
  9. Reconfirm weather, route and pickup details shortly before travel.

Before paying, confirm Calypso I or II, the cabin category and beds, the exact itinerary, your transport and the full price for all passengers. Calypso is a useful option when its combination of Lan Ha Bay activities, Cat Ba visits and onboard pool matches the trip you want.
