Hai Phong to Cat Ba: Transfers, Buses, Ferry and Cable Car

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

For most travelers, getting from Hai Phong to Cat Ba means a road journey to Dong Bai, a ferry crossing to Cai Vieng and another road journey to Cat Ba town. A coordinated transfer is convenient with luggage or an airport arrival; public buses suit travelers with more time to manage each connection.

The Cat Hai–Phu Long cable car is another way to cross when it is operating, but it still needs road transport at both ends. Compare the whole journey to your hotel, not just the minutes spent on the ferry, cable car or passenger boat.

Choose the option that fits your trip

  • Airport pickup, family or luggage: arrange a transfer with a clear handover between the vehicles and ferry.
  • A lower-cost journey with flexible timing: combine the mainland bus, ferry and island bus, or compare a through-ticket bus service.
  • Your own motorbike or car: use the Dong Bai–Cai Vieng vehicle ferry, checking category-specific restrictions and boarding queues.
  • The cable-car experience: check the operating calendar, luggage conditions and onward transport from Phu Long.
  • A passenger boat: only plan around a confirmed sailing with the exact departure and arrival piers supplied by its operator.

Private transfer from Hai Phong to Cat Ba

The Hai Phong to Cat Ba transfer coordinates the route using two vehicles and a foot-passenger ferry crossing. The first vehicle takes you to Dong Bai. After crossing to Cai Vieng, a second vehicle takes you to your agreed hotel or Ben Beo pier.

The ferry fare is included. This is not a promise that the same car crosses with you or that the journey has no waiting time. Confirm how you will carry luggage and identify the second driver, especially if you have children or need boarding assistance.

Give the full pickup address or flight details, destination, passenger count and luggage requirements when requesting the service. Choose vehicle space for people and bags rather than relying on the maximum seat count.

Public buses and through-ticket services

Separate public-bus connections

The public-bus route from the mainland uses 16C between Thuong Ly bus station and Dong Bai ferry. On Cat Ba, route 14 connects Cai Vieng with Cat Ba town. The ferry is the link between those two road services.

Route 16C has scheduled departures from 04:50 to 18:00 at Thuong Ly and 06:00 to 19:20 at Dong Bai. These are departure windows at the ends of the mainland bus route, not ferry or island-bus times. Check the station display for the departure you want to use. Hai Phong Tours recommends choosing your mainland bus only after checking the ferry and route 14 connections for your date.

Check the current departure times and stop locations before leaving. Allow time to buy the ferry ticket and find the island bus after arrival. The last bus on one side may not connect with the last ferry, so avoid starting this journey late without a confirmed plan.

Keep the destination names written down: Dong Bai for the mainland-connected departure pier and Cai Vieng for the arrival pier on Cat Ba. A ticket to the ferry terminal alone does not take you all the way to town.

A coordinated bus ticket

If booking a through-ticket service, ask whether it includes the water crossing and the bus on Cat Ba. Check the exact pickup point, final drop-off, baggage allowance and whether you change vehicles. A stop in Cat Ba town may still leave a separate ride to your hotel or Ben Beo.

Compare complete fares with the same inclusions. Do not assume that an old office address, timetable or pickup promise applies to every company selling a Hai Phong–Cat Ba ticket.

Taking a car or motorbike on the ferry

Drive to Dong Bai, take the vehicle ferry to Cai Vieng and continue across Cat Ba to your destination. Dong Bai replaced the old Got ferry terminal, so follow current signs and a map pin for the correct pier.

Cars and trucks can face temporary restrictions toward Cat Ba during busy periods, even while foot passengers continue to cross. Check whether your vehicle can board at the planned time rather than relying on the passenger timetable alone.

Vehicle boarding can take longer than a foot-passenger crossing when queues build up. Check the fare for your vehicle category and how its occupants are charged. Keep additional time for weekends, holidays and the return journey.

On Cat Ba, choose the coastal or inland road according to your destination and current road conditions. The Cat Ba coastal-road guide explains the scenery and practical stopping considerations. Ride or drive only with the required documents, appropriate insurance and confidence for unfamiliar roads.

Using the Cat Hai–Phu Long cable car

Travel by road from Hai Phong to the Cat Hai station, take the cable car to Phu Long and continue by road to your Cat Ba destination. The cable car does not run from central Hai Phong or arrive in central Cat Ba town.

Check Sun World Cat Ba’s operating calendar for your travel date, including the final boarding time. Confirm the connection from Phu Long before buying a ticket. Weather, maintenance and operating changes may affect the service.

Ask about the current allowance if you have a large suitcase, bicycle, pet or unusual luggage. A standard cable-car ticket does not transport your car or motorbike. If you leave a vehicle at Cat Hai, arrange parking and time the return crossing accordingly.

Passenger boats: check the actual service

A passenger boat can be convenient when its confirmed route and sailing time fit your trip. Before booking, obtain the operator’s name, departure-pier address, arrival-pier address and check-in deadline. Hai Phong has several waterfront boarding points; do not go to Ben Binh or Hong Bang solely because an old guide names it.

Also confirm whether you arrive near Cat Ba town or need an island bus afterward. Check luggage conditions and the weather-cancellation policy. A fast crossing is not necessarily the fastest door-to-door journey.

From Cat Bi Airport or Hai Phong railway station

Start with your actual arrival time, including baggage collection, and check whether the complete island connection can still operate. For an airport pickup, provide the flight number and agree on the meeting point and delay policy.

From Cat Bi Airport to Dong Bai, allow roughly 40–60 minutes by road as an initial estimate, then add airport-exit time and the ferry wait. A private pickup or airport taxi is the simplest way to reach the terminal. If using public buses, first confirm how you will join route 16C; it serves the mainland connection to Dong Bai but does not make an airport-to-Cat-Ba journey complete by itself.

If your destination is a Cat Ba hotel or Ben Beo pier, compare the cost and effort of reaching Dong Bai alone with a through transfer that also coordinates the ferry and island vehicle. Do not ask a driver for the old Got terminal when you mean the public ferry to Cai Vieng.

A late arrival may make a night in Hai Phong more practical than trying to reach the last ferry or cable car. Do not book a same-day island activity against the shortest possible transfer estimate.

Going directly to Ben Beo pier

If you are joining a boat from Ben Beo, give the transport provider the boat company’s meeting point and check-in deadline. Cat Ba town and Ben Beo are different drop-offs. Confirm the final ride if your bus or passenger boat only takes you to town.

Build in enough time to find the boat, complete check-in and handle luggage. A mainland ferry delay does not mean that your Lan Ha Bay boat will wait.

For the return, check the last usable connection in your direction and allow extra time before a train or flight. Reconfirm road and water services after severe weather. The Dong Bai ferry guide explains the crossing and vehicle checks in more detail.
