Hai Phong is a practical starting point for Halong Bay if you are already staying in the city or can take a convenient flight to Cat Bi Airport. The road connection via Bach Dang Bridge lets you continue toward Ha Long without first traveling to Hanoi.
The better starting point depends on your whole trip. If you are already in Hanoi, travel directly from there; adding a stop in Hai Phong solely to reach Halong Bay creates another journey. Choose your cruise and confirm its departure port before booking the connecting transport.
When starting from Hai Phong makes sense
- You are staying or working in Hai Phong: arrange a pickup from your actual hotel or address and travel directly to the port.
- A flight to Cat Bi fits your itinerary: compare its arrival time and total travel cost with your other flight options, including any overnight stay needed before the cruise.
- You want to visit Hai Phong as well as the bay: a city stay can be part of the trip, with a separate onward transfer when it is time to board.
- You want a day cruise while based in Hai Phong: book a package with confirmed outward and return transport, so the cruise and car schedules work together.
When Hanoi remains the more convenient choice
Keep Hanoi as your departure point if you are already staying there, want time in the capital before the cruise, or have a flight schedule that works better through Noi Bai. The shorter road journey from Hai Phong is only an advantage if reaching Hai Phong also fits your plans.
Compare the complete journey: flight fare, baggage charges, airport transport, hotel nights and the cruise transfer. A cheaper flight can lose its advantage if a late arrival requires an extra night or makes the boat connection impractical.
How long does the road journey take?
Around an hour is a useful initial driving estimate for some Hai Phong-to-Ha Long transfers. Your exact starting address, chosen port, traffic and any stops can make the journey longer. The expressway section does not eliminate city streets, junctions or queues near a busy cruise terminal.
Work backward from the cruise company’s requested check-in time, allowing for road delays, unloading luggage and finding the correct lounge. Do not use a best-case driving time as the entire transfer allowance.
Match the car to the right cruise port
Tuan Chau Port and Halong International Cruise Port in Bai Chay are separate destinations. Send the transfer company the port, ship name and meeting point shown on your booking confirmation. A hotel address in Ha Long is a different drop-off again.
Starting your journey in Hai Phong does not mean the cruise boards in Hai Phong. A package may collect you there and take you by road to a port in Ha Long. Check the actual embarkation instructions even when a tour is advertised as departing from Hai Phong.
The Hai Phong to Halong private transfer serves Hai Phong pickups and agreed Ha Long hotels or cruise ports. Choose a vehicle for both passengers and luggage, and confirm the total for your addresses. The road transfer and the cruise booking are separate unless your confirmed package includes both.
Connecting from Cat Bi Airport
Cat Bi is Hai Phong’s airport, with the code HPH. Check flights for your actual travel date; a route shown in an old guide may not operate when you need it.
For a flight arriving on cruise day, allow time to leave the aircraft, complete any arrival formalities and collect your bags before meeting the driver. Ask the cruise operator whether the connection is workable before committing to the flight. If the margin is tight, arrive the previous day and stay in Hai Phong or Ha Long.
Give the transfer company your flight number and agree on the arrivals meeting point and delayed-flight waiting arrangements. A private car offers a direct journey, but it cannot guarantee that a late flight will connect with the boat.
Choosing a day trip or an overnight cruise
