Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hai Phong and Ninh Binh in One Trip

Listen to this page Hands-free overview

You can combine Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hai Phong, and Ninh Binh without returning to Hanoi after every stop. For a trip starting and ending in Hanoi, a practical order is Hanoi → Halong Bay → Hai Phong → Ninh Binh → Hanoi. Book the onward transfer from your cruise port instead of automatically taking the cruise bus back to the capital.

Allow about seven days for a compact trip with one night on the bay and two nights in Ninh Binh. Add another day if you arrive late, want more time in Hanoi, or prefer fewer activities on transfer days. With less time, choose between a Hai Phong stop and a longer countryside stay rather than rushing through all four places.

A seven-day, six-night itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Arrive in Hanoi. Settle into your hotel and explore around Hoan Kiem Lake or the Old Quarter if your arrival time allows. Sleep in Hanoi.
  2. Day 2 — Hanoi to Halong Bay. Take the agreed morning transfer, board your overnight cruise, and follow its afternoon program. Sleep on the boat.
  3. Day 3 — Finish the cruise and continue to Hai Phong. Meet your onward driver after disembarkation. Keep the afternoon flexible and leave time for a local dinner. Sleep in Hai Phong.
  4. Day 4 — Hai Phong to Ninh Binh. Leave in the morning for more countryside time, or visit Do Son first and transfer later. Sleep in the Tam Coc or Trang An area.
  5. Day 5 — A full day in Ninh Binh. Choose a Trang An or Tam Coc boat trip, then one complementary activity such as Hoa Lu’s historic temples or Hang Mua’s viewpoint. Stay a second night in Ninh Binh.
  6. Day 6 — Return to Hanoi. Allow a relaxed morning or another local stop before the road transfer. Spend your final night in Hanoi.
  7. Day 7 — Depart. Arrange your airport journey around your flight’s check-in requirements.

This gives you two hotel nights in Hanoi, one night aboard, one in Hai Phong, and two in Ninh Binh. The final Hanoi night provides separation between an intercity journey and your flight. If Hanoi’s museums, temples, and food are a main interest, add a full day there before the cruise.

Choose the cruise before booking its connecting cars

Compare Halong Bay cruise itineraries by the actual bay route, boarding port, cabin, and time ashore on the last day. A two-day, one-night cruise usually occupies parts of two days; it is not 48 hours on the water.

Send the exact cruise name and terminal to each driver. Tuan Chau and Halong International Cruise Port are different pickup points. Cabin checkout may also happen before the boat reaches shore, so it is the disembarkation time that matters for the onward car or bus.

For the first road leg, choose a Hanoi to Halong transfer that matches your hotel and cruise check-in. Shared services use agreed pickup areas and meeting points; confirm yours even if you stay in the Old Quarter. Do not assume the Hanoi Opera House is a universal meeting point for every operator.

Make Hai Phong an actual stop

Arrange a Halong cruise-port to Hai Phong private transfer for Day 3. Give the driver your hotel address and the cruise contact so pickup can be coordinated if disembarkation changes.

Hai Phong earns its place in this itinerary through city life and food. An easy first afternoon can include the central gardens and the area around the Opera House, followed by local dishes such as banh da cua, a crab noodle soup, or nem cua be, crab spring rolls. Avoid committing to a tightly timed tour immediately after leaving the cruise.

If you want to see Do Son, use the next morning for the private Hai Phong city tour. Its route goes to the coast for Ba De Temple, Bao Dai Villa, K15 Pier, and Tuong Long Tower, rather than being an Old Town walking tour. Confirm the finish time before arranging your afternoon departure; lunch is separate from the tour price.

Continue with a Hai Phong to Ninh Binh private transfer. Put your actual accommodation into the booking. A hotel near Trang An, a Tam Coc homestay, and a town-center bus station are different destinations.

Stay two nights in the Ninh Binh countryside

Two nights give you a full sightseeing day without moving your luggage. Choose a base near the boat routes and activities you want to do, and check how you will reach restaurants or attractions from the property.

Trang An and Tam Coc both offer small-boat journeys through limestone scenery, but they are separate excursions. Pick one first rather than feeling obliged to do both. Hang Mua is useful for a high view over the landscape if you are comfortable climbing steps; Hoa Lu adds historical context to a nature-focused day.

For Day 6, book the Ninh Binh to Hanoi private transfer to your final hotel. If you decide to travel straight to Noi Bai Airport instead, request that exact destination and a flight-based pickup plan. A Hanoi hotel transfer is not automatically an airport transfer.

Shorter route: go straight from Halong to Ninh Binh

If Hai Phong is not a priority, use Hanoi → Halong Bay → Ninh Binh → Hanoi. There is no need to return to Hanoi between the bay and the countryside.

The Halong Bay to Ninh Binh transfer has private and shared options. A private car offers more control over pickup and the final hotel address. A shared limousine may involve waiting, other stops, or a connecting vehicle, so confirm the complete journey.

After an overnight cruise, ask which departure connects with your actual arrival ashore. After a day cruise, expect a much later arrival in Ninh Binh: the shared evening service ends at Tam Coc Boat Station and requires you to arrange the final ride to your accommodation. Tell the hotel about your late arrival before booking this option.

Adjust the route to your flights and luggage

If you fly into Hai Phong, you can start there, continue to Halong Bay and Ninh Binh, and finish in Hanoi. If you fly out of Hai Phong, consider the reverse pattern: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Halong Bay, then Hai Phong. Your flight airports should help determine the sequence.

A same-day flight-to-cruise connection needs the operator’s agreement. Landing time, baggage collection, the road journey, and the boarding deadline all matter; landing before a particular hour does not by itself guarantee the connection.

Keep your luggage with you when continuing beyond the cruise, unless you have arranged another solution. Choose a vehicle for both passengers and bags. Price each onward transfer separately unless your booking confirmation explicitly includes it, and avoid paying for a cruise return bus to Hanoi that your itinerary will not use.
